Why are rewards important?

You do what feels right to you Litsa.

Rewards are supposed to make you feel positive. Even if you have had these rewards before you can still reward yourself with them now. The key is that they are planned and you feel like you earned them.

Hi Ashley,
I struggle with the concept of rewards. For me, a reward for not smoking would be something that I would give myself NOW and that I was NOT able to give myself whilst I was smoking. For example, when I smoked, I could have a massage so that negates a massage from being a reward for not smoking now. The one thing that I feel will be a reward for me now would be having my teeth whitened. This is not something I thought of doing or did whilst I was smoking, so it will feel like a reward (I am saving it for my 6-months quit). So, even though I agree that rewards are important - I can think of very few that will be MEANINGFUL rewards to me. I think I need to start seeing this in a different light but I don't know how to change this mindset.

Here's why:

1- Rewards positively reinforce the behaviors you are trying to establish.

2- Rewards give you something to work towards. Resisting cravings will be easier if you are rewarded for overcoming temptation.

3- Rewards are motivational and make you happy.

Tips

1- Reward yourself for every craving you overcome and every situation/trigger that you've handled well, smoke free.

2- Choose rewards you value and are willing to work towards. Acquiring them must be important to you.

Why do you think rewards are important?
