in at the deep end

Hi Chard, I have probs with water too. I grew up with a cousin who thought it hilarious to yank people underwater. Unfortunately, I am not a very good swimmer, probably because of my anxiety. For me it hits whenever I get deep enough that it comes up to my chin. But it does get better the more frequently I go into deeper water. Sometimes to help me, (this might sound silly) I'll keep close to the edge of the pool so I feel like I have an out if I need it. I know that even if I panic and suddenly can't swim, that I can kinda almost jump to the edge if I'm close enough. Does this new pool you're trying out get deeper gradually? If so, maybe you could practice slowly going in deeper and deeper. Also, if part of the problem is that you can't stand being submerged, practice submerging yourself in the shallow end for longer and longer periods of time, then start practicing it in deeper and deeper water. Wish I could give you advice coming from someone who's mastered this phobia but I'm still a work in progress. :) Good luck! Cynthia

Here is a strange one. Went swimming today in a pool that I haven't visited before. I have always had an irrational fear of going under the water since the age of 3 for a number of reasons: * Aged 3 got chucked in the pool every week by a friend of the family when unable to swim (they thought it would "Get me used to the water") * Slipped and fell in the deep end of my local swimming pool aged 5 and learning to swim * Got held under the water aged 7 by my evil swimming teacher because I was terrified of putting my head under the water. (I could swim then) So, this has been a lifelong phobia of mine. I love swimming though and don't mind if the pool is 6ft or under. I was swimming along the pool, then realised that the sign didnt say 6FT but 16.6FT! Then I started to panic, Im trying to learn relaxation so that I can control the thoughts, Im a good swimmer and I wouldn t drown unless I fainted or something. I wonder if anybody else has a similar phobia and if they could give me any help in getting over it. chardthefish (who doesn't like deep water!)
