Hi Simmy,

Thanks for book recommendations which I plan to check out.  Also, I love your movie list!  What a great idea and I am looking forward to watching these!

Hope all is well with you.

Julie I have also found your suggestions very helpful. Still meaning to read Buddha's Brain. I would like to add a couple books I have enjoyed:
  • Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp
  • Taking the Leap by Pema Chodron
Also, I am making myself a list of movies to watch about alcoholism, addiction, and recovery. I haven't watched them all yet, but I have found all them recommended on recovery blogs and sites:
  • A Royal Hangover (UK doc)
  • Once Were Warriors (New Zealand)
  • Stuart Saves His Family (comedy/SNL)
  • Permanent Midnight (the book is also supposed to be very good if not better)
  • My Name is Joe (Scotland)
  • Days of Wine and Roses (1960s classic oldie)
  • The Lost Weekend (1945 film noir drama)
  • Half Nelson (with the lovely Ryan Gosling)
  • Clean and Sober (with Michael Keaton)
  • Drunk in Public (doc)
  • Life or Meth (doc)
  • Withnail and I
  • 28 Days
  • The Basketball Diaries
  • When a Man Loves a Woman
  • Leaving Las Vegas
  • Flight
  • The Salton Sea
  • Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle
  • Running with Demons (about an addict who uses long distance running in his recovery - I love running!)
  • Machine Gun Preacher
  • Requiem for a Dream (if I can handle watching this again, it's awesome but INTENSE)
  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (from what I recall, this one left me feeling hungover just from watching it)
  • My Name is Bill W (about the founders of AA)
  • The Doors
  • Drugstore Cowboy
  • Rachel Getting Married
  • Drunks (reviews aren't great but it looks worth watching, set in an AA meeting)
  • Everything Must Go
  • Smashed

Thanks for the list, Julie. I checked out one of the blogs you listed, "Tired of Thinking about Drinking", and couldn't stop reading! I can totally relate to Belle; I love her sense of humour and writing style. Unfortunately, I'm a newbie and don't yet have any resources to share but wanted to thank you for the list. I think this is a great idea.

I have found certain resources very helpful in early sobriety and thought it might be helpful to create an ongoing list of our favourites.  I am hoping that others will add their recommendations so we can all benefit from our experiences.

Books:
In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Mate
Buddha's Brain by Rick Hanson
Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff
Recover to Live by Christopher Kennedy Lawford
Allen Carr's Easy Way to Control Alcohol  by Allen Carr

Websites:
Tired of Thinking About Drinking - blog  (100 Day Challenge)
Mrs. D. Is Doing Without - blog
www.tarabrach.com  (podcasts, meditations and talks)

Apps:
Afternoon Affirmations
Hazelden - Inspirations
        -Letting Go

Looking forward to checking out others' resources.
