Hi everyone,
I heard on the news today that the makers of Paxil (Smithkline Beecham) are going to issue new warnings and statistics regarding risk of suicide amongst users under 30 years old.
This is actually not new news, I was prescibed Paxil 6 years ago and the pamphlet that came in the box included a suicide warning, but it was targeted at those in their teens.
My GP prescibed me Effexor (an SNRI) at the beginning of this year, he is a very caring, informed, and experienced doctor. He warned me about the potential for difficulty getting onto the drug and even about the potential for suicide attempts. But he felt that the statistics were very low, and only significant amongst teens.
I'll admit, I've never taken any anti-depressant, even though they've been prescribed to me twice. But I think that they are an effective tool in helping people get over their anxiety or depression. These "new" findings in the news are no real suprise to anyone who has done any research.
