Fear of the dentist

Me too! I get really panicky and usually end up cancelling or deciding that I do not need the work after all, I will just live with the pain as it is better than living with the fear!!!! As with any of these things, avoidance is not the answer - we all know that!

hi, i don't know if this will help or not, but i've had a real over-riding fear of the dentist long before i developed an anxiety disorder, and have always had an anasthetic that knocks me right out. sure it costs more but its worth every penny. personally i don;t think we have to master EVERY fear, some are perfectly normal ! would this be an option in the states ? its still horrible going there, i don't think its something i will ever get used to, i shake, want to run away etc, but again this is not an unusual thing to feel, who really enjoys going to the dentist ???!!! good luck, you can do it, if i can i know that you can !!

abfaboy2000, Start preparing for this appointment now. Use it as an opportunity to do exposure work with the help of the program. Let us know if we can help in any way. Danielle _____________________ The PC Support Team

I have been doing really well as far as going in to the dentist. I use to call and set up an appoinntment but would always cancel at the last moment. Now I met a great dentist that really let's me go at my own pace. But I still get really, really scared when I am there. And soon I am going to have to get my wisdom teeth out and that really freaks me out.

I too have major anxiety/ panic attacks when I go to the dentist now. I find that being 'silly' or having fun with your anxiety can help sometimes. Last time I had to go to the dentist I was terrified, but I chose to tell the dentist and instead of getting scared every time I felt the need to flee, I tried to giggle a bit instead. It was not easy, but evetually it kinda sticks with you. It's like trying to force a smile when you don't really want to, if you stick with it- eventually you become more comfortable with it. Keep strong and try and take some things lightly. :)

I would personally rather do about anything rather than go to the dentist! You are not alone!! I usually take a .25 mg of Xanax about 1/2 hour before my appointment, and try to keep doing deep breathing techniques. Also, let your dentist know you have extreme anxiety, most will give you "laughing gas" that helps, and will try to work quickly to help you finish sooner. You also can bring along a small CD player with earphones, listening to music will help you relax. I hope these little "tricks" will help. But most important, is to let your dentist know about your anxiety, and I'm sure he/she will do their best to help. Good Luck!!

boy, This is the time to challenge your thoughts. Go through the program slowly and work towards this goal. The program can walk you through step by step and prepare you for a positive end result. Let us know if we can help :) Josie ______________________________ The Panic Center Support Team.

Hi, funny you should put this as I have been thinking all afternoon about putting the same thing on here, I cannot even bring myselkf to pick up the phone I am terrified I am going to die from the injection a oouple of years ago my doctor gave me some tablets and gave me the wrong dose in error double the dose and it dropped my heart beat to 30 bpm, was a very scarey experience ever since then I won't take anything as I think it will make me die and worry about my heart constantly, but the dentist has been a issue forever for me, I take one look at him and burst into tears, I shake, jelly, numb from head to toe and feel faint (I have a huge fear that if I faint it means there is something really wrong and I have to fight it) I have got to have a couple of fillings, the injection scares me as I think it will be to much or something and I might die, then the drilling that takes for ever then the filling in a chair thats tipped right back, my tooth actually hurts a bit and bleeds everytime I clean it sometimes just bleeds for no reason but I just cannot get my head round it even though my Husband wil lsit and hold my hand and my mum will come as well. I have so many fears I think I read to much I'm 32 and feel like I will never have a child because I read about a rare condition that is fatal at birth and can picture it happening, I carn't even go swimming with out getting out pool and shaking and feeling faint, going out in general is a challenge sometimes and I try to get out of it. Feel like everything passes you by. What you do?

I was wondering if anyone else has fears about going to the dentist. I just started going to the dentist after 5 years and everytime I go I keep having major panic attacks. Anyone else out there that has this same feeling?
