Agoraphobic because of Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)

While I don't have this particular problem, I know how debilitating it can be. My cousin, who is only in her teens, has struggled with it for about 3 years now. For long time she wasn't able to go to school, and eventually she wasn't able to go anywhere in public - and she even had trouble watching tv at home. She went to therapy where they did exposure training similar to what this program will walk you through. She's now able to watch tv and movies most of the time, and can go to restaurants, although with some pretty strong anxiety. She's back in school, and last summer she got on an airplane and flew cross-country for a family vacation. There is hope! If you're looking for a place to start when you get to the exposure sessions, my cousin started her exposure training by working towards being able to watch movies where people threw up (the second Harry Potter movie, for example). Good luck!

Lesley, Please be sure to keep working through the program and start challenging those fears! Use mealtimes as an opportunity to start doing exposure work. Keep us posted. Danielle _______________________ The PC Support Team

Oh my goodness!!! I am EXACTLY like you. I am severely emetophobic and agoraphobic and haven't left my house in 17 months. I also believe my agoraphobia was caused by my emet. I haven't been sick in over 8 years but the fear is always in my head. Currently I'm having a lot of trouble eating because I'm scared it will make me sick. Are you on any medication? I need to try something but my emet makes me very wary of meds because of the chance they'll make me sick. Nausea is just as scary to m as vomiting. You're not alone!

My_br0ken_smile, Welcome to the Panic Center and thanks for sharing your story. Please take advantage of our CBT program located in your session diary. It is geared to tailor to your specific fears & phobias and help you to begin grabbing hold of your anxiety through exposure work. If you feel you would benefit from additional assistance, please consult your doctor. You happen to be in a city that has a wonderful addiction & mental health hospital with many diverse programs. By getting a referral from your doctor, it may be easier for you to find the exact help you're looking for. Hope this helps. Danielle _______________________ The PC Support Team

Hi, I'm new here and would like to know if anyone else suffer from emetophobia and if, like me, the emetophobia is the cause of your agoraphobia. It's my understanding that emetophobia is something like the third most common phobia, yet nobody ever talks about it nor is it ever included in any of the anxiety disorder literature. Most importantly, does anyone know of a therapist who specializes in the treatment of this particular phobia (in Toronto)? And no, the "cure" is not to throw up - I know this from firsthand experience. It's my opinion, having struggled with this for over 20 years, that emetophobia has nothing to do with actual vomiting. Yet, I can't find a healthcare professional who is even remotely familiar with how debilitating this phobia can be. The usual reaction I get is "well nobody LIKES to vomit" like I don't already know this. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
