I was diagnosed over 15 years ago with anxiety disorders. I was always a real nervous anxious kid tho. I think this just kinda happened progressed in my case. I mean my family is prone to nervous personnalities and i am not the only diagnosed case of anxiety in the family tree. I think that some of my life events made it worse. Fortunately some life events made it better too. I am having a rough patch lately and i know that was triggered by intense stress over a long period. But i would say all in all there wasn't a specific trigger to this except maybe the fact that it runs in the family. The only triggers i can think of are relapse triggers or escalation triggers but i think i was just kinds predisposed to this. Btw thanks for starting this thread it really was nice to see how it is for everyone else. -Diva

HI, my phobia started slowly, at first i found it difficult to walk down steps and then it increased to a full blown agoraphobia that focuses on a fear of falling when walking. So I need somebody to hold on to when i'm outdoors, and a piece of furniture when I walk inside my home. I think my behaviour must be funny for an outsider to watch, and I try to laugh at myself, but that doesn't help much. My phobia began to get bad after my husband passed, and then, one day, out of the blue I had a huge panic attack. I haven't got over this phobia yet, but I'm very glad to have found the Panic Center. It helps me to understand I'm not alone in my suffering. All the best to everybody. Tess from far away (South America)

My panic attacks and agoraphobia trigger was a trip to the hospital after to much parting. I thought I was dying, They gave me a mild seditive and sent me home. Thats was 8 years ago and the attacks are still with me.

Hi, I have had panic attacks for four years now. My Father has a nervous & worrying disposition and I think I get a little of this from him also, I have just started noticing that my 8 year old daughter worries to the point of tears if something is wrong with her that she doesn't understand (stomach cramp, leg ache etc). My panic attacks started after a good few years of having four children at home, we were running two businesses with limited staff & my sister being terminally ill and eventually passing away, I think everything just became too much. So I slowed down, we now have three children at home, three businesses & we have moved countries haha... The good days are coming more & more frequently now and I am confident I can control this eventually but it is sure hard going through it! My best to you all, Toni

Now I know, that almost all my "episodes" were relate to very stressfull (for me) situations: the death of a very close friend's sister (when I was 13 years old), my parents divorce, my wedding, going to live to another city, and now, 3 months ago, after a miscarriage. But I don't understand why the anxiety and anxious thougts least so long (3 months now); when they will go away? I know that some day, but sometimes I feel desperate

yes mine got very severe after an emergency surgery that saved my life. That was 6 years ago, had this condition since, although I had some anxiety and depression before that but not near as bad. If i dont take meds, i have full blown panic attacks now.

Lester and Maggie, Thanks for responding. I am taking a Psych class right now and we are learning about possible causes and triggers for anxiety disorders, particularly panic disorder, and you learn different theories that certain people have genetic vulnerabilities to it, others have environment triggers like trauma/stress, caffeine, drugs, etc, and some have a mixture of both. I just wanted to get an idea of how many of us here fall into certain categories. My experience was a mixture of trauma/intense stress and a genetic vulnerability since my mom also suffers from panic attacks and agoraphobia. It is my understanding that, just like high blood pressure and other diseases, I had a gene for panic disorder/anxiety and then stressful life events triggered that gene to become active and now I have the disorder. I really like to hear other people's stories to gain a better perspective on the stuff I learn in class because actual stories are better then textbbok scenarios. Thank you guys for sharing ;)

Hi Isabella- Well, I remember having a really bad dizzy spell during a conversation and getting really worried about everything and anything following that incident. I do think I was more susceptible to anxiety/panic at that point in my life as a result of accumulated stress and life changes. I'm not 100% sure, but that's what seems to make most sense in my case. :)
