I'm panicking about... PANICKING!

thanks Danielle and Shrug, I had butterflies all day when I got the email that said my so-called safe partner that I choose to ride with me thru the tunnel on wed-cannot make it. Immediately I started thinking avoidance and then attempt to find alternative methods, which of course one involed a bridge, no thank you. Distraction did help me some today, it's just that I have 1/2 hr or more to drive before I even get to the tunnel then you have to stop and pay before you enter-I got this far once and then just sat there for 2 hrs, turned around and went home. I think if I could just get thru it once and get it over(fell the fear and do it anyway) I would be much better and coming back is not as bad. I just don't like that work is requiring this and I want more time to heal by doing the lessons. oh well tommorrow is another day.....

Hello Suezqo. I'm sorry I don't have any quick tips either. Just wanted to say hello & welcome and to wish you best, especially on Wednesday. ;) Shrug

Hey, When I was first diagnosed with panic disorder I thought that I was going crazy. Why panic when logically I know that there is nothing to panic about? Any why panic about panicking? Anticipatory panic and anxiety about the possibility of panic attacks and anxiety in the future was huge in my life. And I totally understand where you're coming from in this regard. You feel 'stupid' for doing so but you feel helpless because you can't stop the cycle. This is what led to me becoming an agoraphobic because I tried to escape the situations that I could not control. My best advice is to have patience with yourself (I know...it's easier said than done and probably doesn't help you very much for your drive next week) and try to remember that this didn't happen overnight so it probably won't go away overnight. I'm sorry that I can't think of any really quick fixes for you except to avoid sugar or caffeine before you drive (for me they can sometimes trigger an attack).

Thanks for the support everyone! I really want to kick this whole thing in the butt and get over it, in fact I need to be able to drive in traffice and thru a tunnel by wed of next week. I have had way to much time to think about it and driving home last night in traffic for 2 hours and nowhere to turn off did not help matters, I am reading all posts and doing my lessons. Does anyone have any really really quick fixes? Many of the tips actualy work-just not for me while driving, I did read a really old review about adding licence plates etc. I think my problem is counteracting, whenever I use a tip or trick, I remember why I am using it(to rid panic) and the panic comes back again. Hi suezqo, Welcome to the site! Thanks for sharing your introduction here with us. You have found a great place to share your feelings of panic and anxiety with members who truly understand. You are definitely not alone in your feelings of panic associated with driving. You may want to use the search feature to view others experiences with this concern. Be sure to check out our free online program if you have not already done so. There are different types of therapy out there. Some therapies involve talking about the past in an attempt to understand the problem and develop some strategies for coping, etc. The Panic Program is not talk therapy. Its not about medications either. It's a treatment program thats all about getting you actively involved in your own improvement. It teaches you things you may not understand about panic and agoraphobia, your own panic, your own panic cycle, and as you learn and get involved, you begin the journey and the process of taking back control from a fear that at the moment is controlling you. So it's not about talking. It's about doing. And in doing, it's about recovery. Its a guide, a silent teacher, and a whole program. It's like going to a school that offers a course in your very own fears and how to beat your very own fears down. It works this way: The Program guides you through the process of getting back this control. It prepares you for this, one single step at a time, and gives you some homework to bring you along from session 1 to session 2, and onward, in a series of 12 sessions over a period of twelve weeks. We wish you all the best and look forward to hearing from you again soon. Casey ___________________________________ The PC Support Team

hey everyone, I am very new to this site and I had my 2nd panic attack today, and now I think it will be a set back. I know you have to feel the fear and do it anyway, but mine keeps happening in major traffic and then I am stuck, now starting to interfere with my ability to work and I am the only bread winner in my house after being off for 6 months. And they have had enuf of me already, and are more like "just get over it now, ok" I really don't like the pills when I am driving and I have to be able to concentrate at my job, it's a catch 22. I have every mediatation tape available and drugs and a support counselor-they are just not there when I get trapped in traffic. I feel like I am having a heart attack and might wreck the car before I can pull over. Help Help Help
