Hiya Maggie, I have had experiences similar to what Isabelle described also. I just wanted to let you know so that you can see you are not alone in this and that well as Isabella said, it will pass and you will be fine. Just hang in there. Sometimes it just takes more time for your body to settle down again. Isabella had great advice for you, so i will not start repeating. But you are not alone. Remember: This too shall pass! -Diva

Maggie, When my anxiety was at its worst I was prescribed ativan. I took it and still felt extremely anxious and still couldn't sleep. Then I took it the next morning and afternoon and was still on edge. It wasn't until my fourth or fifth dose that I actually felt calm and settled down. Then I took it for about a week, three times a day, and it helped reset my system because I stopped after that and only took it when I was really on edge or unable to sleep and it seemed to work for me each time. However, I recall a very bad panic attack several months ago where I woke up and instantly started to panic. I had to go to class so I took an ativan and went to class but I was still panicking and it didn't calm me down at all, I just felt extremely anxious and out of it, like I was high or something. You may just have extreme anxiety right now and your ativan may not be enough, even if it has been in the past. I would suggest telling your doctor to see what he thinks. But for now just try to do breathing exercises, relax, do something to get your mind off of it like doing dishes or cleaning the house or something like that, whatever is to your liking. I usually clean when I am anxious to just get my mind off of it and burn off some of the adrenaline. I hope this helps you and remember that you aren't going to lose it, you aren't going crazy, and that it is just severe anxiety that is causing you to feel the way you do. It'll get better. ~Isabella~

Ok so I went to the dentist for a consultation today and had to take 0.5 mg of lorazepam and I was still quite anxious upon arrival. After I left, I took another 0.5 mgs as I still felt pretty stressed and my b/f and I were having a slight disagreement at the time as well; which just made things worse. Anyhow, now I am at home and I still feel pretty anxious/ like I may lose control, etc- I was wondering if anyone else here has ever continued to feel anxious even when on ativan? It scares me because then I think there might be something else to my anxiety/panic after all... Any advice would be appreciated.

Hiya Maggie. I do't have experience with lorazepam or ativan but i have major experience with getting off meds lol. I also have much experience dealing with the benzo called rivotril or klonopin (Clonazepam). The thing is all benzos are quite addictive and so if your body is used to a certain dose for a while it will react if you suddenly stop the medication. Benzos should always be tappered off slowly... I would suggest you call your doctor or pharmacist they really are the experts on which medication should be tapered off how. That what i do when i want to reduce or stop taking ,eds. Anyway, sorry iI could not be more helpful. -Diva

I was wondering if anyone here ever suffered withdrawals from lorazepam/ativan? I used to take it SO infrequently but lately have been taking it more often. On days I do not think about taking it, eventually I feel down, irritable, more anxious and shaky, etc... I think at most I take about 1 and a half mgs a day ( whether it be at broken times, or 1mg and then later another half). Anyhoooo, if anyone has had any experiences with withdrawals from this benzo, could you please lend me some tips as to how one would taper off them correctly? Thank you so much!

kelly, Welcome to The Panic Center. We thank you for sharing your story with us today. This support group is full of supportive individuals who may be able to help you answer some questions regarding panic and anxiety. If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find many supportive tests. These tests are not diagnostic tools and are not a replacement or substitute for a physicians advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. We also have developed a Panic Program. This program is 12-weeks and involves the tools mentioned above. Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead. If you have any questions or concerns with our "TOOLS" you can contact our support department at support@paniccenter.net. Take care and we hope to hear from you soon.
