hormonal imbalance

Hi there, I don't know if you're aware but I do remember this being a subject of great debate on this site a while ago ( i don't know how far back its possible to access ??? ), and there were loads of messages about it, all saying roughly the same thing, that hormones does seem to play large role in anxiety for some people. I know when I was going through 'it', I researched it as well as I could, looking at research papers and stuff, and that was nearly five years ago now, so there may be more now, and the evidence at that time seemed to point towards a hormone imbalance. I was just beginning the 'change' when I had my first panic attack, and eventually after a very enlightened cpn was allocated to me, was put onto HRT, and haven't had a major one since. I don't know what the thinking is about HRT in the states but here in the u.k its become a no no, so now I'm off it ( I am a smoker so I guess it makes sense ) and still no panic !! Incidentally there has also been research that suggests an increased risk of anxiety etc if you are a smoker !! Food for thought ! Anyway research a little, and see if what you read makes sense to you. There are some very positive suggestions, medical wise , that may help, and discuss with your carer/ doctor. Who'd be a woman huh !!!!

In the last 6 months my cycles have really been affecting my anxiety. I know I definitely have pmdd. I saw my gyno and had him thoroughly check me out. Turns out I have two large fibroids in my uterus and some ovarian cysts. I am 43. I believe I am starting "the change". I'm having a hysterectomy in about six weeks. I'm really hoping once I have this done and we straighten out the hormone replacement issue afterwards that my anxiety will calm down. I have a history of endometriosis(not constant), ovarian cysts, and pre-cancerous tissue on my cervix (3 times). So anyway, yes, I definitely believe your female hormones can affect your anxiety.

Hi Dina, Speaking for myself I know there is a direct relation to my anxiety and my cycle. It feels as if I know exactly when my PMS begins because my anxiety goes up alot. I have the added bonus of beginning the change which kicked everything into high gear. I had been anxiety free for quite a few years (I might get feelings of anxiousness but not experience a full blown attack; no more than six times a year) until I hit peri-menopause. I am now fearful to leave my five block radius safety zone. This site has been so helpful for me to recognize when I need to take care of myself. It is important fot you to challenge your thought process when you feel the PMS coming on. Remind yourself that this happens once a month and that you are in control. I highly recommend working the program on this site. Good luck!!!

Well I have not had children but from the moment I started having menstruations I have notiiced i am more easily sad and anxious during certain moments in my cycle. From very early on in my struggle with this I learned that in some parts of the month I just shouldn't listen to myself or take any big life decisions lol. I do beleive in the hormone anxiety/depression link thingy. -Diva

Dina, Your doctor is the best authority to advise you about PMDD although you are not alone. Many members have noticed their anxiety worsens as their cycle comes to an end. With regards to driving, are you becoming anxious? If so, keep working through the program. The activities in Session 2 & 3 may be of help to you as these sessions focus on how to challenge your anxious thoughts. Danielle ______________________ The PC Support Team

i'm very new to this site but not new to anxiety and panic. i've done a lot of research on perimenopause and menopause and there is a lot of data to support hormonal imbalance and anxiety ties. take care!

Wow!! That is me to a T! Lately I have been doing exceptionally well but about a week and a half before my period I get very very anxious(to where I don't even want to leave the house), nauseous, dizzy, and I get severe headaches or migraines. I have tracked it for several months now and the same time every month I have the onset of severe symptoms. And, like you, I never had this problem with PMS or PMDD until after I had my son nearly two years ago. That is when the severe and dibilitating anxiety set in. You are not alone and I do believe that it is a hormonal imbalance and I've heard that SSRI's help with that but I have yet to try one so I can't tell you if that works. Keep me posted if you find anything else out. ~Isabella~

I was wondering, is it possible that panic attacks are caused by a hormonal imbalance? 2 weeks before I get my menstrual cycle, My panic attacks/anxiety are way worse. I am talking like 3 to 4 panic attacks a day for 2 weeks straight. My guinecologist says I have PMDD (pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder). I also get the worst head-aches and nausea that entire week and get so tired that I can barely function. The only thing so far that pulls me through somewhat, is xanax. I don't know what else to do but I am so sick of living with this. Strange thing is, I never had this until I had a child. During this 2 weeks, I also have the worse time driving. I still do drive because I work full time, but sometimes I have to pull over and "pull it together" which causes me to be late for work a lot, but I have no other means of transportation to get there. Can anyone relate to this?
