Our ancestors were zanier then us!  We're lucky we live in this day and age, as messed up as it seems, our world has progressed quite a bit.

It is kinda funny as I chuckled reading your post. (the last line)

You are very right about the past and oh my gosh I never could imagine them taking out my brain :0
I never new they did that!

Hi CSB,

I've read a few articles which do insist there are relations between the two.  More specifically, drugs and alcohol are coping mechanisms.  Though it should be noted that coping mechanisms can be applied towards a variety of mental health issues.

The mental health field as we know it is fairly young, so tactics to both understand and treat are only recently becoming known.  In the olden days they tried to remove portions of the brain to fix mental health issues...thank God we don't live in those times!

Sounds like your father really loved you and your family, to be able to endure what he endured for you all.  Now I understand the reason they say the older generation is stronger, they've had to overcome unimaginable things to make today what it is!  Although that's also why I'm not too worried about the younger generation and all we go through, we'll be just as strong in the end.

Basically what I get from what you said, is that the intervention you received, and the fact that your willing to work on understanding your situation, has actually helped your father as well.  Well, aren't you just the starter of good things (I mean that in the best way possible)

I was going through posts and found this one too!
It is funny because I was thinking about this the other day and thought about my dad.
My dad is an alcoholic, I can tell when he has had a bad day when I phone him because he is wasted and tries to hide it.  He has been like this for as long as I can remember (maybe one of the reasons I am the way I am now).
I remember my dad didn't always take us to the park, or to soccer games but we did go to disney and 1-2 camping trips etc.
well I remember my mom saying years ago that one day in my dad's mid 20's he just stoped doing things, quit his baseball team, didn't hang out with friends etc. and that seems to be when all the drinking started.  Well of course I didn't think much of it when my mom told me.
Then the other day it hit me (when I had the bad attack at my mother inlaws store)  They were all drinking wine etc and they offered me some. I don't drink.
Maybe all this time my father has suffered from it just turns to drinking!  Maybe we have paople drinking who have been drinking for so long because there was no help for them.  I mean can you amagine being a man in the 60's 70's and providing for your family and your wife stays home with your 3 kids and you suffer from anxiety and you have to work to provide for the family. you don't know what is wrong with you because there is no info about it and you think you are going crazy so you drink or do drugs to help you stop from going crazy!
My dad told me when I finaly started coming around and admiting it to everyone, that maybe he does suffer from it too!
So maybe that will help you on your quest, maybe there are studies out there to tell weather there is a link between the 2 (which I am sure there is).

Jane,

Great topic of conversation here! Members, add your input here. Why are there not more support groups for anxiety sufferers?

Talk to you local doctor or community mental health centre to find out if there are groups in your area.

Jane- I agree.  It would be nice to have more support for this problem.  Like DM said though I think if we keep looking we can find help.  I am actively involved with a Al-Anon group for families of alcoholics.  They too struggle more now then ever to get people involved.  I believe their over all membership has dropped.  That is to bad because I really believe without them I don't know where I would be.  Their program is a twelve step program just like AA.  I was looking for something like that on the internet and I did find the site for anxiety but I wanted to do this program first.  I have found the literature in Al-Anon very helpful.  I need to try and find the site for anxiety again cause honestly I don't remember how I found them. I would like to get their literature and see if it would help me. I think they have a support group an hour or more away from where I live. It's on a night I work so not very do-able for me.....
Bottom line I think like in anything the burden of responsibility lies on ourselves to do what we have to for our own well being. I plan to keep trying as frustrated as it is because I have found help here and a better understanding of myself and others.  I do understand your frustration!

Hi Jane

I definately can understand your frustration.  I too have found that support for other things seems to be more readily accessible BUT I have found that the resources for anxiety are available you just have to look.  Drug and alcohol addiction has been around much longer and is much more accepted as a "problem" that needs treatment...and really it is.

Mental disorders in the past have been pushed to the side but from my own personal point of view I think that it is changing... and hopefully as we go forward it will only get better and easier to find help.

I have found support easily for the panic disorder but I struggle with OCD a bit too and that is where I have found it to be a bit more difficult.  Theres quite a bit available in the Vancouver which is our largest city but where I am about an our outside of the city not much is happening...

It will get better, I believe ...patience is hard though when our problems are now.  Thank god for sites like this.

it feels like there are not that many anxitey groups out there i am glad i found this one. it seems like that there are groups for people for drugs, drinking, and other groups that have more support and help. but i feel like if you have anxitey promblems that they are not as important and it makes my furstion so high. I try to be a good person and understand myself and others if you have a drug or drinking promblem it is like people understand you more and if i say i have a anxitey promblem it is not that big of a deal because i am not causeing trouble for others and myself. it is pushing me to the end!! maybe i should do something like drink or take drugs and get in trouble for peolpe to take me for real! but all i would do is hurt myself more . sorry for putting this on i just had to let in out!! dose anyone else feel this way? let me know!!  thanks Jane
