Anxiety, good or bad? Part 1 - Our traits

for 15 år siden 0 94 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I have realised one good thing from anxiety which is how much i appreciate life and the little things in life i have taken for granted i.e going shopping with friends, cinema, going out for meals and and just enjoying time with loved ones because certain things like this get taken away when you have panic attacks. (shame it takes something like panic attacks to make you appreciate the little things)

Diva, you've got it spot on again !!! Courage, thats what we all have in abundance !! And persistance !! When we fall down, we get up  and try again, and again.

I think the other thing that this disorder has given us is a sense of empathy. We're all complete strangers really but look how we're using this site, with lots of encouragement and advice from everyone, and a willingness to share our experiences. I'm sure that expands into other area's of our lives too,  as we gain some understanding and empathise with other ' problems '. It may sound weird, especially to those that are suffering right now, but some good can come out of our ' disorder ' ( wish there was another word !! )

So we are up to worry, analysis, determination and creativity.

I would say, paradoxically we are brave or courageous. Courage is not about the absence of fear. It is about facing fear, it is about being afraid and doint it anyway. I think us anxious people are brave. That is how we get better. We are so afraid and yet we push and we try and we succeed! So I would add courage to the list.

Jhori81,

Great Discussion!

Focus, worry and determination are common traits that those with anxiety may have, had, or may experience in the future at some point.

I'd like to add that creativity can also be a trait. One may use their creativity to avoid, create or distract either themselves or others.

Members, we'd love to read your contributions of thoughts!

(determination),like i said b4 we learn new things easily and they become 2nd nature pretty fast, because we focus back in on our problems.(clouded thinking patterns)  we are always looking or searching for that piece of the puzzle that we just can put our hands on. From a christian point of view I've always thought i had a greater purpose. And  we can't stand to be locked down in any circumstance, if what we enjoy doe'snt have a real meaning or we feel like we are just spinning the wheels we tend to drop what ever that is like a bad habit.(Brainstorming)we always analize things before we have time to even realize we are doing it.....i will brainstorm and post back later oh yea if i get interupted while thinking i get frustrated and i cant get back on subject as quick.we spend most of our time thinking we are usually quiet in many situation's dont tend to speak unless we feel we have the correct ammo to be accurate on what we are talking about.Normaly we dont ingage in useless conversation like he said she said or random topics unless it peak's our interest's

After reading yet another story on Michael Phelps, I've come back to an old question that I never really answered.  What good can anxiety be?  Everything in life has a purpose, call that my Christian outlook.  Well, I want to find out what those possibilities are, with the help of anyone here willing, including you health specialists!  Consider this an open house hypothesis, meaning anyone willing, is encouraged to join.  No matter how big or small the contribution, please feel free to add.

So the idea, is that our disorder can have some purpose, something it can be utilized for.  ADHD for instance creates hyperactivity, along with a Tazmanian Devil like mind that's everywhere and very hard to stop.  However, find something this is focused on, for instance swimming for M. Phelps, and you get a world record breaking athlete.  Dyslexia is another one, which last year a study found 35% of small business owners have.  Researchers found that this disorder made them better communicators along with problem solvers.  If looney toons can do it, why can't we looney toons do it?

To find this out, I'm breaking it up into 3 posts.  Part 1 explains our common (or uncommon) traits, part 2 will be common activities related to each trait.  Part 3 will be the finale.  All are encouraged to add to each group as it's posted.

So, part 1:  Common traits.  We worry.  We're very analytical, otherwise how could we worry so much about one thing?  Have so many reasons to fear one thing?  We're also very focused, otherwise how could we worry about the one thing without, you guessed it, focus.  We have the ability to bring about the fight or flight reactions on a whim, hence panic attacks.  What are some other traits we have?  Please help!
