health anxiety

Yes I have had Health Anxiety for 3 years and just like Debi I have gone through many, many tests. I worry about my health so much because I ultimately worry about dying. I am most fearful of the things that can kill me( heart attack, anuerysm, blood clots) not things like having the flu or a cold. If I have a symptom that I can credit to being something thats not serious than I am not bothered. Its as soon as I have a symptom/symtoms that I think could be something more serious than I am panicking. I break this cycle though by quickly trying to give myself an alternate reason for the symptoms I feel. Like if I have a headache I try to think of all the other reasons I could be having it like feeling tired or sore neck instead of thinking its an anerysm. If I can do this quickly enough than many times I break my cycle. I have also used the 10 questions to challenge my thoughts. Hope this helps.

Hello Kevzabob,

That is a part of anxiety just like everyone else have said. Every time I get a mild anxiety symptom I automatically assume it's my blood pressure. I know my blood pressure is perfectly fine and of course when I get anxious it can spike up that is a normal response! As long as your Dr has done tests and you know there is nothing wrong with you continue to do this program and you will be fine. We have all done every test imagined..

Hello Kevzabob,

Concerns about health are a common issue in anxiety.   The entire program can help with this.  The sessions on Worry and Challenging Negativity will help you especially.

hey kevzabob,

this i can totally relate to, recently i had cold and took some cold and flu medication which contained ephedrine and i had an allergic reaction resulting in a tacycardia, this is one of the reasons i suffer from anxiety.

i have also been to the hospital had every single test done, i must have spent 60 hours in emergency waiting for test upon test only to be rejected and leaving the doctors dumbfounded as to why i was there.

the day i started to accept the fact i had anxiety and was was prone to panic attacks and even though they were uncomfortable and most of the time scary, they weren't going to kill me was the start of the turnaround for me, this happened before i started CBT.

just because you accept that you have anxiety doesnt make you powerless, in fact it takes the power away from the anxiety. one you accept that you have it, there is no need to get anxious about being anxious and if your not getting anxious about being anxious then theres no need to be anxious.

Hi Kevzabob,

yes i have dealt with this, when i turned 40 and started getting lightheaded which was anxiety, i had every test possible in the last two years, bone scans, brain scans, chest xrays, other xrays, CT scans, blood tests (about 10), thyroid checks, been to hospital at least twice because of freaking out about one thing or another, had heart check, ultrasounds, biopsys, mamograms, gastroscopy,  and probably another 10 tests i cant recall lol, I used to get the slightest symptoms and think it was something awful, now i dont worry so much because i have had that many tests that have come back normal i figure im ok, and i also realised i was getting out of control and that if something was going to go wrong i could not do anything about it so now i try not to worry so much and just be as healthy as i can
They did end up finding galstones and i have to have my gallbladder removed this year but thats it.
