Use becomes addiction when you can not get away even though what you are doing is of no use. Playing solitaire with a head ache is addiction I think. Looking up relevant information at 3 in the morning is not if you can't sleep and the information is important. Surfing the same site looking for change instead of doing other things and setting a time for the net I think is addiction.
If your lap top is open on the table at meal time that is addiction.

I think I could just check my daily internet history.

I just wish to use the internet as a tool, so that I meet my goals.

That's an interesting question. If you are interested you might want to do a little research on that. I am not that familair with internet addiction.  I would assume if your internet use is interfering with your satisfaction in other areas of life then it might be something you would want to limit. 
 
You mentioned you "could" monitor your time. What do you want to do about this? And by doing what you want what will this bring you?

I guess I'd be knocking more of the things off my "to do" list.
 
The internet is the portal to the universe and all it's resources, so it's so powerful.  Sometimes I guess I get "off track", and it can affect a negative mood, instead of a constructive one.  An example might be I'd remember someone I wasn't happy working with, and the triggers drain instead of nourishing me.
 
I already measure my use of posting, and tv and sleep.  I suppose I could measure my internet use too, but the history, usually shows my "thought trail", and the time might not be my concern as much as the quality of use.
 
Out of curiousity, when does use become an "addiction"?

If you were more focused and self disiplined how would that help you? What would be different? What would you be doing differently.
 
Technology is a tool. How do you want to use this tool?  Remember you have a choice.

If it is any consolation I find the internet very addictive. I'm on a wireless internet stick. Pay for use rather than unlimited. I'm only good for three Gig right now so no watching junk. But I can use my laptop anywhere a cell phone works, like in the hospital. We will be switching to unlimited dish so it will be interesting to see if I start wasting my time on it. I certainly hope not.
I don't think I'm going to like the umbilical cord limiting my travel from my station.
As for the net. If you can sort the crap from the cream there is a wealth of information. My rule is that if two out of ten disagree then the other eight are sheep and probably wrong. Second rule is if the information is attached to a book you have to buy then even with the book it is probably incomplete or worse, useless
As long as the net doesn't rule your life and keep you from more important things then it is probably harmless.

It can be a double edged sword...Just like anything in life to much of a good thing can be a problem..

I wonder what others feel about the availability of the Internet and how it helps or hinders us?
 
I looked at my "history" today, and noticed that my mind is quite "busy".  I'm not sure that supports my need for stability, and keeping my nose to the grindstone, as I try to rebuild my life.
 
I wish I was more focused, self-disciplined.
