This is the website of an Australian woman who does a lot of work in the Buddhist community etc. She used to suffer from panic/anxiety etc. She has a lot of dvds etc. I bought her Happy Not Hassled series. It has helped me a lot. Public Speaking is tough on me too but I try not to have any predictions about what is going to happen etc.

Hgm,
Depending where you live, there are many groups, and you can find a group where you feel comfortable.  Where I live, there were different companies with the groups, and many different times.  Remember that they are  there for the same reason you are, but that didn't occur to me until I was thinking about responding to you.  I found they allowed me all the time I wished to begin, since everybody goes through the same thing, and it's inexpensive.
 
Knowing what I know now about exposure(densitisation), I'd break up the venture into graduated bits that were easy to achieve.  eg. making contact with the club executive people, then driving by, then going into the building.  I even found a masseuse in the building, so I could relax before the meeting.
 
Feel free to post, and ask questions, and you'll get coaching, or ask friends, family, etc. without using our "lingo".   You might want to make a tape of yourself now, since it would be so much more rewarding in the future.
 
And building a skill has no known side effects or contraindications except confidence.

Cool.  Thanks for the tip.  I've been thinking about Toastmaster's. I just have to get the guts to go through with it.

What really helped me was taking public speaking courses, like Toastmasters or The Dale Carnegie program.  Some companies will pay partly or all of the cost, and you can succeed in your personal life too.   There are many others which will similarly give supportive environments like the Christopher course, and college night courses, debating clubs.

Good thing is I survived the week.  No breakdowns.  It was tough.  Too bad my success last week didn't carry through this week.  Another setback.  I had another anxiety attack in a meeting, got choked up, apologized, got over it but still felt like crap.  The negative thought going through my mind was "I'm going to have an anxiety attack".  Sure enough, it occurred.  The attacks seem to be related to my belief that I cannot present inner thoughts verbally in a coherent manner.  Toughest thing about a breakdown is forgiving yourself afterwards.  The negative thoughts go into overdrive and you feel worthless. I need a practice setting but don't have one.  I'm injected into the 100% full-up anxiety situations, not the practice level 80% or less situations.  I am hopeful that I can get to the point of preventing the attacks, which is the outcome I need.  When an attack hits, there is nothing I seem to be able to do to conciously alter it.  It takes over.  The 10 questions used to fight anxiety haven't helped when the attack has set in.  At this point, I'm living the answers to questions 9. and 10 and am calculating 'how bad it would really be'.  The mantra below didn't work out.  I'm considering the use of beta blockers but don't really want to go there.  In any case, I'll be asking my doctor about this possibility.   I know that a glass of wine can drop my anxiety levels, but that isn't a good cure for an 8am meeting.  I'm worried about the possibility of alcohol or any drug becoming habit forming and a dependence.  So, I will keep trying to rewire the brain naturally.

Thank you for sharing this experience with us. To tackle negative thoughts about something that you have to do in the immediate future I highly recommend using the following:

10 Questions that Help Fight Anxious Thoughts
1.   Is it "true"?
2.   How do I know it’s true?
3.   Is the anxious thought 100% true? (Something less than 100% true is not true)
4.   What's the evidence for it being true?
5.   What's the evidence against it being true?
6.   Has it ever happened before?
7.   What's different now?
8.   How bad would it really be?
9.   What's the worst thing that could happen?
10. If the worst thing happened, how bad would it really be?

I've been trying to come up to speed very quickly regarding how to limit anxiety.  I've recently suffered an anxiety attack at a meeting and could properly think nor form words.  I'm now off to another city to be a player at yet another meeting.   The pressure exists and I've been trying to write down all the negative thoughts that come rushing through my head.  This online CBT is great, but given that I have only one day to try to reduce the anxiety, the odds are in favour of the disorder coming through again.   Of course, that is negative thinking and this specific negative thought is already entered in my 'homework'.  But alas, the thought keeps infiltrating the brain circuitry.  Everything in the exposure section indicates to start off at a lower level than '100%' but unfortunately, my starting point will be at 100%.  The only thought going for me right now is a line from an early Tom Cruise movie "Risky Business" where he gets councilled by a friend who says "Sometimes, you just got to say, what the f**k".  I'll be repeating this as a mantra for the rest of the day.  It might not be the best positive thought to go with, but its better than thinking about other alternatives.
