Carrot & The Stick: Using rewards & punishments to reach goals

Hi Hugs,

Rewards are important motivational tools.  It is important to chose rewards that you value. You should look forward to them and appreciate them. Keep in mind everyone is different and different things work for different people. If you know what works for you then stick to what works.

Sorry to hear you hurt yourself exercising. Sometimes this happens. Be sure to stretch and warm up before exercising and cool down and stretch after exercising.  I have also heard that taking magnesium supplements can help with muscle pain when working out.  Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any supplements though.

Enjoy your heart rate monitor carmieslug!

Sorry to hear about your bad day, Red.  By the way, our morning sky looked almost as beautiful as your profile picture (I wasn't on the water though - what an incredible sight!).  My first and primary objective with my running has always been to not get hurt.  I like to say "No pain, no pain".  It's difficult sometimes because the it can be so enjoyable to exercise.  I try to make sure not to run every day and to do increase my activity very gradually each week so as to not overdue.  Easier said than done.
Hugs,  I love carrots!  I get a lot of satisfaction in simply being able to say that I accomplished a goal but sometimes a nice reward is necessary.  I took the advice of Red and ordered myself a heart monitor watch to reward myself for goals accomplished this year!

Sounds kind of like the exercise program I have started on this last month..I should be healthier and hopefully look better when I reach my goal..I over did it yesterday with the exercise and sure am sore today..It's that no pain no gain, all or nothing attitude that get me in trouble every time..I hope I have learned my lesson this time..

Ouch

As I near the year's end, I often start plans, which involve setting goals and working backwards to figure out the steps.

Are any of you using rewards and deterrents(the word "punishment" seems pejoritive) when setting goals. eg.  Without chocolates so available and stored away, I notice I eat less("out of sight out of mind").

In terms of rewards,  I just feel I'm not "generous" with myself.  I think the deterrents work, but rewards seem not so "motivating".

Any comments?
