Driving and panic

for 20 år siden 0 1 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I'm about to turn 30 and I've had my license since I was 16, but I haven't driven in a while. I recently started to take driving lessons again because I am out of practice. It's not a big deal, but I get some pretty rude comments from other drivers on the road because I am in a driver's ed car. The lessons have helped and I'd rather be embarassed than kill someone or get into an accident. Has anyone else ever encountered this? Thanks

Sheri Its really good to know that I am not alone out there. Sometimes I feel like I am the only person on earth going through these crazy upside down feelings. I wish you luck in the struggle to get back all that YOU and I have lost to this Beast(Syndrome).

Anxiety Queen, Yes, I can relate to that. I too worry about flipping on a flight. I too worry that if I needed help I would not be able to get it on a flight. I worry that I will start screaming & running down the aisles. Horrible, horrible feeling - The crazy thing is, before I had this horrible disorder, I LOVED flying, I really did - I loved everything about it. As for trains, well, I can hardly get on one now either for fear of the same thing as being on a plane. The last time was last May - I really had to keep myself calm because I thought I was going to lose it.

Hello I am new to this site but totally relate to everything I am reading. I get panic and Anxiety in Traffic Jams but the really BIG PANIC attack are plane Rides. I feel like I am either going to have a heart attack on the plane and die because we are far from a hospital or I am going to get up and start screaming like a lunatic, I actually considered it on a flight from Manchester England to Atlanta GA. However I visualized them putting me in a strait Jacket and that Actually helped me to calm down. I have not flown in over 3 years and I cancelled my last trip because I was scared of freaking out or dying on the flight. Needless to say I feel kinda trapped. I am going to try taking a train ride to see if I can handle that.!!

Hi Dona, Yes I know what you mean about going over a bridge - it is that feeling again of not being in control, of not being able to get off exactly when you want. A few years ago, I had a dream that my husband, myself & our 2 children were driving on a bridge. Somehow, we ended up going over the side & that fall down to the water was horrible - even though it was a dream I kept thinking all the things you would if it was not a dream. I woke up just before we hit the water - but that dream has haunted me ever since - everytime I go over a bridge now I am petrified that the dream was a preminition & that this might be the time that it will acutally happen. How daft is that? How long does it take to drive over that bridge that you were on? Do you normally avoid it? If so, it took alot of guts to do it. Even though you were a nervous wreck doing it - you still did it! So, it was a positive thing! Well done!!!

I too freak out in situations where I am between vehicles at a stop light, or even with someone turning somewhere. When I overcame my fears the first time I had to to be the one driving or I would not go. I was such a control freak that if I had an attack I could turn the car around instead of looking like a crazed woman and trying to explain why I needed to turn around. Unfortunately that ended and I had a relapse until last year when I was forced to give up all control(YIKES). I broke my ankle and had to travel to 100miles away for surgery. Now I am able to travel to the next time, but I will NOT drive there myself, I would rather have someone else drive me so that I can sit and focus on freaking out( which is a bad thing). Often the distractions do not help and I am faced with riding the panic help, and it does help.. ( though at the time during them I wanna scream). I have learned to just breathe deeply and look at the lights ahead or focus on bumperstickers or something that will help distract me until its time. Thankfully it gets better each time.

Hi Guys, Thanks all for the advice. It's great to know I'm not alone, although I'm sorry you have all had to compromise your freedom by these horrible fears and feelings too. I could not drive on the highway either. My first attack in my car was about 7 months ago and I was on the highway, alone, and I had no choice but to continue driving until I got to the next town. It was awful! I almost called 911 on my cell, sure I was going to die. Before that, I could drive anywhere, I never thought a thing about red lights or highways. Also, I would never travel at peak hours for fear of a traffic jam. I stick around my neighborhood until agter dinner and then if I have to go further, I will drive after 6:30pm when the traffic has slowed down. But even then, my safe zone is still within 5 km of my house. Still pretty restrictive, however for several months I could not drive my car down the street without feeling anxious so I've made major progress. Sheri- I haven't flown in almost 2 years, when I first got ill with this. I hope to fly again, I used to love travelling and still have many more places to go, but I could not handle that feeling of not being able to get off the plane either! I think I would rather crash than have a major PA mid-air!!! Anyways, thanks again for all your replies- I will try the techniques. I would love to be free from this. Sarah

Hi Spangle, Thanks for the advice. Your are right of course. Just worried that if I say no to the bus trip then I am running away. However, you are right about people without agorophobia would even be daunted by the thought. Also, I help with this class every week, and I know just how difficult some of the children in that class are. However, you are also right about me making the decision a.s.a.p & then moving on. Will let you know.

Sheri, I just wanted to tell you, if you decide to take the bus trip, good for you! But if you decide it's too much right now, that's okay too. Don't beat yourself up over it. Even "normal" people would be stressed about a bus trip with a bunch of kids. My advice is, make your decision ASAP and move on, so you won't spend tons of time worrying about it. Good luck! Spangle
