catching the bus

hi birdie, it doesn't seem silly at all - i am totally able to relate to how you feel. i hadn't had a major panic attack for say a year or so and my first major one that happened was as a passenger. from that time i then found it hard going in cars at all, but i slowly got there. it takes time and perseverance and setbacks along the way! let me know how you go with it all, my thoughts are with you :)

Hi! Georgie, this is a topic I really can relate to cause this is definitely my biggest fear!!!!  I'm afraid to ride in the car
with anyone other than someone safe.  This is my big frustration.  It seems so silly but for me it feels huge.  I do fine
driving myself or my children or with my husband or mom but add another couple, a load of kids or another parent and
I panic.  I think my fear is of what if I have a panic attack and want to escape and i can't. Or what will they think of me.
Or what if I need a bathroom cause my stomach starts churning, sorry if that is to personal but this frustrates me to no
end.  My children are are at the age where carpooling is unavoidable but I do the  best I can to avoid it. I know this is not
healthy and I don't want them to know my irrational fear.  When I feel good and able to drive them I do and it feels great
but I really avoid it at all costs.  I'm hoping to really over come this but it feels impossible.
Reading how you successfully ride the bus repeatedly, I can feel your wonderful accomplishment and appreciate the effort
you are making and you should feel really great about your successs!!!! I'm celebrating with you!  I use to be fine in most
of these circumstances so i'm hoping I will see and get the mindset that I can go back to being unafraid.
Way to go you are doing great!  I'm really envious!!!!

hey everyone,

thank you so much for your support! since then i have had my blood pressure done again (and it's fine) AND...

i have caught the bus four times since!! one time i was quite panicky - in the "i'm going to vomit, i need to get off now" but i did my self-talk thing (you've just eaten and are sitting where the wheel is, so it's bumpy, you're bound to feel a bit bad. if you do throw up, it's not the end of the world... etc)
this is a real success for me as i have had real trouble with buses and at one time was panicky going in the car with friends :)

does anyone have any transport stories to share?

- georgie :)

Hi Georgie

It doesn't matter what bus you got on.. the fact that you caught a bus is FANTASTIC!!

As it's been stated in other posts..it will only get easier.  Often we take 2 steps forward one step back so it can take a bit.. and that's ok.. makes us experts in the end...  As for the high blood pressure reading.. if you have anxiety  they should take that into account..and you can always start charting yours.. Our grocery stores all have those machines where you can get free readings... If yours have the same you can pop in on your "good" days and see that all is good and well.

Good on you Georgie!!

Hi Georgie,
Thanks for sharing your experiences. It is really encouraging. I also think that if you keep doing it, you may eventually get used to it. Good luck!

Hi Georgie,

I wouldn't be overly concerned about your blood-pressure.  Anxiety releases adrenalin, which in turn makes the heart race, which causes blood pressure to rise.

Many congrats to you on your achievement today.  I have recently overcome my fear of public transport and still get nervous, but things can only ever get better.

Congrats again

georgie,   Sounds like you followed a great plan. Keep perfecting it and with practice, you will minimize your panic and feel great about taking the bus.     Sylvie, Bilingual Health Educator

Congratulations Georgie,

It seems like you handled it very well, even when the doctor told you something no one wants to hear. I sure hope you got your hair done
afterwards! You deserve it.
