Have panic attacks when I drive

I am also afraid of the highway driving. It started out with this over ten years ago. It then got so bad that I couldn't leave the house. With the help of medication and exposure therapy I slowly got back to driving around town with someone in the car with me. It is now at the point when I can go anywhere with someone with me. My comfort zone expands to 30 miles from my house, if I am alone. But only on the highway if there are exits every 2 miles. I am glad I am not alone with this phobia.

I've been diagnosed with agoraphobia, I have panic attacks when I'm driving, a passenger in a car, on a bus, train, boat, plane, subway, motorbike.. basically anything that moves.. I hate bridges by the way! It's really effecting my life as you can imagine! My therapist thinks it has somebody to do with being in control, when I'm driving it's better but then I worry that I'm going to lose control of the car and hurt somebody, and Its so difficult to have passengers, because I think that I'm going to hurt them aswell.. I've been thinking alot about this control thing, and I suppose it does make sense...., I don't know, well I'm still analizing myself constantly and I could'nt believe that there are so many people from all over the world who suffer from the same symptoms... You're not alone Take care xx

I have not driven on a freeway in about 10 years or so except once--I was seeing a great counselor and she got me to do it. But I never continued. I'm quite familiar with the back roads in my area. I'm hoping to some day get back to freeway driving. Even if it's not all the time. I know I can.

I used to love driving. Even joked about being a truck driver at one time , but now ...I am petrified of driving. It's a real ordeal just to get into my car & go up the street to the **** grocery store. Still trying to find out what the hell happened to me. These panic attacks blind-sided me. Such a mystery.

Hello All, I was just online looking for a hypnotist to help me with my fear of highway driving. I typed in fear of highways and found this site. The first message I read was from Jackie and I started to cry b/c it sounded just like me. I also used to get into my beautiful green civic and drive whenever and where ever I wanted until one evening in 1998. I was very stressed out b/c of personal reasons and lost focus on the highway. I lost control of the car for a split second and the drivers behind me started honking b/c I was swerving back and forth until I regained control. Since that day, I just shut down and I have been having panic attacks. I used to drive for hours on the highway, but now I cannot go for more than 20 minutes w/out an attack. I refuse to drive anyone else. My friends tell me to just get over it, but they don't understand. I have lost a great deal of confidence and freedom. I am so frustrated. I want to move out of NYC but am afraid that if I move to another state where highways are the major thruways, my life will be mess. At one point I was doing good, but then I lost it again. I just feel like the road ahead will never end and I will crash. Sorry for the long message, just overwhelmed and happy at the same time to find this site.

I have panic attacks when i drive. Mine are most often triggered when i hit a downtown area. I also get panic attacks if I run into traffic and get stopped on the freeway. I still drive but i avoid these situations as much as possible. I may pull off and take back roads if the freeway is stopped. I also only go through town when I think traffic will be light. Lord help me if there is stopped traffic in the towntown sections. When I am caught in a panic attack I always turn the airconditioning on full blast. I also always have water with me so i start drinking water. Now that I relize what these attacks are I am hoping I can make it though these corridors without any problems or with minor episodes. But I work from home and see no need to take that challenge anytime soon. Hope that helps some Jimbo

I had panic attacks when I drove, one on test in 1996. I wasnt having attacks in other situations just then, so I did the classic avoidance thing and stopped driving because I didnt know what it was at that time. (I thought it was something weird that just happened to me when driving!) I always had nightmares that i couldn t stop the car and crashed the night before a driving lesson. Last year I drove a friends car, just a short distance but i was ok. Now I have decided to make the step of tackling these thoughts and getting behind the wheel again. I have no fear when in anybody elses car at all but my friend does, she couldn t travel in cars until she was put on meds in 2001. In my case it is something to do with me and loosing control- not being able to face the consequences of that. Anybody have the same thing? chardthefish x

I have only had them while driving long distances or into the city. Last trip in I had to pull over to sort it out but continued on. The trip back is always much less anxiety which tells me exposure plays an important role. HMMM?

Imarnco. You heart is in the right place and you are a wonderful support. You may want to talk to him personally about what kind of support you can give. As an individual he may have to figure out things for himself. This site is an amazing start with tests and programs to assist him through his journey and they are free. Take a look at the site yourself and you will find many references and tools that may help you understand what he is going through. There is all kinds of help available. Our support group is also free and very helpful. Many members here are able to support, as they are going through similar events.
