BPD and depression

Hi, BDP is quite serious and well beyond depression. I personally believe in self education, BDP is a serious illness and there are certain critia that you must meet to qualify, I know that your in Canada but you can use the DSM-IV as a base line. If your in rural Ontario and having trouble finding help I suggest that you take a week off from your regular schedule get on a Greyhound bus, make it in to Toronto and go to St. Joesph Hospital. Make sure you have your health card and go to emergency, tell them that your suffering from major depression and BDP if you believe you have it and need help. From there they will put you in "Crisis Unit" which is not the most pleasent place to be but this is where you'll get your initial assesment, blood work etc. If you get there in the morning (highly suggested because you don't want to be in Crisis overnight) you will be able to see a psychiatrist and tell her your situation... she is super nice and will probally start you on medication. From there you will be sent to the second floor which is a new unit called "Short Stay", maximum 4 days. This is a very comfortable setting with awesome nurses and social workers ++ and the psychiatrist will monitor your meds. If after 4 days your not comfortable with your meds and there early side effects or feel you need more care they will move you to 7M, this will take a little to get used to but you have to be willing to get the help you need. You could also go to a Mental Health Clinic but they are more for people who have already been through the hospital and need medication modifications, they are also like a cattle farm, packed with all kinds, no seats and the psychiatrist is typically strictly medical, i.e. does not have the time nor wants to hear any life problems just whats your meds and what is wrong with your meds or what meds do you need. I wish you the best of luck and if you need any directions or more information on St.Joe's don't hesitate to ask... David

Dying_Dying_DEAD, BPD causes the individual to bounce between both a manic & depressive state. Depression only has one state. Only a mental health professional is well-trained enough to make the distinction between both while evaluating an individual. Hope this helps, Danielle _________________________ The DC Support Team

How do you know the difference between BPD and Depression?

Blossom, Have you tried going to the mental health centre? I don't know what it is called in Ont. but we have it here in BC. They have treatments and Dr's available to help. I have recently been going to a day program and it has been very helpful. Check it out...I am sure there will be something they can set you up with. As for BPD it is a form of depression. I recently found out that MDD (major depressive disorder, which is what I have) is a form of BPD. Go figure! Good luck and you know there is always someone here to vent to. ;)

to anne, i relate to your post because I have been diagnosed with bpd "traits" and have struggled with depression many times. You are not alone in your frustrations with health care professionals-- I feel the same. jame

Naaa more than anything I am frustrated by the lack of knowledge in health professionals about the nuances and interactions in mental illnesses. I guess I just needed to vent more than anything. There are no doctors in my area accepting new patients. My family moved here two years ago and they are still on waiting lists. I am in rural Ontario, Canada and this is a growing problem. In addition it is VERY difficult to get an appointment with a psychiatrist even if a referral is made. After meeting with a pdoc once or twice, the gp manages treatment based on the pdocs reccommendations. I am getting nowhere :( Thanks, Anne

blossom, Unfortunately as moderators we are unable to prescribe medications. You may contact your local hospital and it should have a listing of doctors in you area excepting new patients, as well as specialized doctors. Hope this helps, Josie ___________________________________ The Depression Center Support Team.

I guess my question is about the effectiveness of meds for treating bpd related depression. I am treated by my GP and he does not have a good understanding of bpd at all :( or depression for that matter. Grrrrr. Here in rural Ontario it is very difficult to get a doctor these days, nevermind a good doctor. Anne

Blossom, Have you tried the program and taken the test? This may better assess the situation for you and your doctor. Our program can help you step by step in understanding and helping with progress. Please let us know how we can help, Josie ___________________________________ The Depression Center Support Team.

I have been struggling with depression all my life. Two years ago I was diagnosed with BPD after being suicidal for quite a few months. I understand that depression and bpd are closely related... Anne
