confused about what to do

hi tanya perhaps you shouldn't worry about crying in front of your therapist...also crying may be an emotional relieve valve. personally i find that structured groups give me energy...i am very awkward and shy in a nonstructured social situation. i would join the group....whats the downside?...if you don't join you will probably be getting down on yourself for not doing so. take care bob

I've thought of having a friend call for me, but my friends that are aware of my depression think that I'm doing okay right now and don't really feel up to dealing with them. My intention today was to talk to my therapist and have her help me get things set up, but I won't be able to get more than two words out without crying. I know I shouldn't feel emarassed or ashamed because she sees me like that all the time, but I still am. I may just call the appointment line tomorrow instead, might be easier to do since it will likely just be a receptionist and won't know me.

I understand that totally. Do you have a friend that could make that initial call for you? They don't know what your voice sounds like. That might make it easier for you. Kate14

Sat around all day trying to make the phone call to get into the group program, but couldn't. Guess I will try again tomorrow.

Tanya, - reaching out for help IS hard - admitting you're not perfect IS hard - admitting you need help IS hard Especially if you're not used to having a support system in your life. Sometimes however we all need help. Don't deny yourself anything available to you. You're worth it. Kate14

Okay, I've made that decision that I wanted to try the group because I gotta do something. Thanks to everyone who replies, i need the encouragement right now. Hopefully, I can make the phone call today. I'm not good about asking for help. Had my therapist said "I want you to do this..." it would be okay, but for me to have to say I want to--I don't know why that is so hard. Then again, everything is hard.

Hi Tanya, I relate to a lot of what you're saying. I'm apprehensive about group situations too. However if you're still able to do it I would. I avoided all activities that involved being around strangers for so long, that now I don't leave the house at all if I don't have to. If it's essential to go out, I carry Ativan with me in case I panic. My point being... it's a very short trip from "causes some anxiety" to agoraphobia. The other thing to keep in mind is the very nature of the group participants. It's entirely possible everyone there will feel the same. Finally, even IF it doesn't help you a lot, maybe you can help someone else. :)

I know how you feel about groups. I myself have never done one for depression, but I had joined a group for another reason. You would be surprised out how welcome they make you feel. They are all there for the same reason, so there's no judging, only a "family" if you will, trying to help one another feel better. So it may be something to look into. Look at it this way. If you don't go, you're always going to be wondering what it's like. If you do go and don't like it, well then it was a waste of an hour or so... I'm so sorry to hear about your job. I too know what it's like not to know who I am, I'm still trying to struggle with that one. And it makes it hard to "go get a life" if you don't know what type of life you want. Something that helps me though, is to get out, try new things... most of the people I hang out with our my husbands friends. I only have one good friend of "my own" and she has two kids and a job, so I don't get to see her very often. But by getting out, your experiencing new things, you'll find out what you like, what you don't. And before you know it you will be molding a "new and improved" you. I hope that you can have a wonderful day today, and an even better weekend! Hang in there hon!

Just had an appointment with my therapist today. Wasn't supposed to, but they called me because they had a cancellation. My roomate had taken the message, and when she told me I just cried because I was relieved because didn't know if I could wait another week to see her. I left my job in March, and since then I've been slowly going downhill. My entire life revolved around work, and I mean entire. At the time that was okay, because at least I could focus on that. However, my therapist pointed out today how imbalanced that is and that is one thing I need to change. Hard to get a life when you don't know anything about who you are and what you are like other than that you don't like yourself. Anyway, my therapist suggested today that I think about a two week day program at the clinic to help me get back on track quicker than seeing her 50 minutes every week or two. On one hand, I think that I've been way worse than I am right now, so I don't deserve or need to do that program. On the other hand, I don't want to keep going downhill either. Or maybe I'm just apprehensive because it is a group, never done that so that causes some anxiety in itself.
