Hi Kumari... welcome to the DC.  I'm so glad you found us.  Your family situation sounds really difficult.  Ashley gave you some good advice and direction for getting started on the DC program.  Please know, also, that we are here on the forums to listen and support you... feel free to use the forums to vent all you need to.  No need to play nice here.  Just be real. Thanks for your intro...

Welcome Kumari,

Glad you found us. We will support you through this every step of the way and we would never laugh at you - unless you were trying to be funny of course

First of all, you may want to start another thread just for you to introduce yourself to ensure all members here get a chance to eMeet you.

It sounds like you have come here because your husband suggested it. Other then other people's opinions what is your internal motivation for coming here? What would you like your focus to be here?

Have you talked to a doctor about the Depression you have been experiencing? You may want to talk to a doctor to get a proper diagnosis and to discuss treatment options. This program is intended for individuals with mild to moderate depression. It is based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy principles which is a proven method for treating depression. Start with Session 1 and take your time working your way through. It does take work but if you put the work in you will see results. We will help you get there.

In regards to your relationship with your in-laws you might want to check out the section on Relationships and Resolving Disputes. You will likely also find that as you work on the program other issues might become more manageable. Just remember you cannot ever change another's behaviour you can just change how you react to it.

Looking forward to reading more from you!

Hello, so my husband told me today that I need therapy. I just had my second child. A beautiful little girl and my parents are having a party for her this weekend. They have invited my mother in law and sisters in law and I don't want to go if they are there. I hate them. They make my life miserable whenever they are around.  My husband told me that I really need to deal with my issues with them and get over it so I decided join this community to help me deal with my issues. I also have been quietly dealing with depression for years. I had a very tramatiic childhood.  When I was 5 my daddy started cheating on my mother. They stayed together and fought constantly. The whole family knew about and mocked us. It's embarrassing to talk about that's why I like to anonymous part of the program. Actually I tried to talk to husband about it last week and he just laughed at me.. I guess I done a great job of covering it up. I do great smiling and sucking it up at someone when I really want to tell them to f off.

Marianas... it sure is a lot to read!  Worth the effort though.   To avoid feeling overwhelmed to the point of giving up... it can help to break things down into smaller pieces.  Reading just a few paragraphs or setting time limits on how long you read.  It will all still be here tomorrow and the next day and the next.  We will be here too   Take care.  You are doing great!  Getting started is the hardest part.

I have started on the worksheets, and I realize there is so much to read in the first lesson.  I am a little overwhelmed but excited that I have something to focus on other than my emotions and negative thoughts.  I have started on the activity tracker but have more to go.  I exercised today, and noticed that this is when my depression level is close to zero.  Staying idle so I can think about things to come or things that have happened makes me more depressed.
Thanks for letting me share.

Welcome Marianas... so glad to have you with us.  I can so understand the desire you expressed in your post:

"I need something to focus on, other than my emotions or the what if's."

I agree with Matt that learning to set and attain mental health goals will help. I just don't think you can do it without focusing on emotions and "what ifs".
This is no magical, instant cure, but if you are willing to do the reading and homework it can definitely help you get your life back from the depression.

With your many roles, life must be very busy ... so it will be a challenge to make the time for yourself to do the program. You will need determination and the belief (or hope) that you deserve the time and attention needed to get better.

Thanks for the intro... already a great start.  Don't hesitate to use the forums for support, asking questions or just having a good vent.  We are here to listen.

Hi Marianas,

Sorry to hear your depression has started to impact different facets of your life.
In saying that, you have come to the right place and hopefully we (health educators) and the wonderful members here can help out as well. You will find a lot of different information here in the support group, stories, and as you have already noticed, a welcome place to share experiences.

As well, you will see a very extensive program where you can work through different worksheets and get a lot of great information.

You were looking for something to focus on other than emotions and what ifs. I think a good place to start is with goals. When set effectively, goal setting can be very positive.  Setting goals will help direct your focus, increase confidence, increase self esteem, increase sense of control, and act as a motivator as you work towards feeling more like yourself.
Section two of the program discusses goals and how to go about setting and meeting them. There is some homework involved as well so be sure to work on that. Hope that this can act as a good starting point and will provide you with that focus you are looking for.

Thanks for sharing with us, and keep checking in to let us know how things are going.

Hello, I have been battling with depression and the ups and downs that comes with it for a long time.  I am physically and mentally exhausted from letting life control me and my emotions.  I would like to be the one to be in control of my life and my emotions.  I am in my forty's, a married mom of two and have a wonderful job.  My depression was under control for a while, but it has returned in huge waves.  It has started to affect my job, relationships, and everyday activities.  I need something to focus on, other than my emotions or the what if's. Thanks for letting me share.
