Overcoming the toughest of the tough triggers

Deli, like you, I had one of these experiences last night too. I was out with my bf and one of our friends (who both smoke) and started to want to smoke and couldn't leave because I didn't drive and was feeling a bit miserable... for about 5 minutes. That's what I love about these triggers now is that they really don't last that long. After about 5 minutes, I had forgotten all about my desire to smoke and continued to have a wonderful night. Over a year ago, that would have devestated my entire night and I would NOT have been fun to be around! So glad I can enjoy my smoke free life now and if a trigger shows up, so what? It's gone before I know it! :) Glad you made it through yours too. Having somebody else help you out and give you support is a GREAT way to get through triggers! :) Windy, what have you done to get through your triggers? Share with us how you have done it. Do you now talk on the phone in a different part of the house or perhaps do something while you're on the phone? Or playing cards, what distraction techniques have you used? I'm curious to know! :) Anyone else? Crave the Quit! What has been your toughest trigger that you have overcome in your quit so far and how have you done it? I think this thread should be able to help a lot of newer members who may be facing the same triggers. What specific things have you done to get through your tough triggers? I'll go first. Mine is definitely going out to the bar with smokers. In the beginning, not getting drunk was key. I also would make sure that I could leave at anytime by bringing my own car and making sure I was the only one in it, so if I was ready to leave and others weren't, I wasn't a burden to them. This really helped a lot and I found that just being ABLE to leave made me a lot calmer... most of the time, I didn't even have to leave... I just knew that I could. Several times, I have gone out and either didn't drive or was responsible for taking others home and the cravings got tough because I knew that I couldn't just leave. So I definitely recommend that if you're going to go out to a bar or someplace where there will be smokers, have an escape plan just in case. Who else? What triggers have you overcome and how have you done it? Crave the Quit! Bravo BFS, This is a great way to share our experiences and learn from one another. Coping with cravings is an excellent way to push forward and it will be interesting to see all the responses :) Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
