Jim is right, hype yourself up.  I can feel the benefits of quitting with only smoking 5 years.  They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks.. we don't say that here!  You can do this!

      You will be at war with the nico-demon!!!  Psych yourself up and commit to never losing one battle and you WILL win!
 
       Keep a Positive Mental Attitude going into this quit and it will make the whole process so much more bearable, trust me!  The positive attitude I am talking about is Self Talk like, "I can do this!"  not "I'll try to do it!"  I'm telling ya, it really will make all the difference in the world!  You will be taking the journey to freedom from a nasty addiction and you will do well if you can get it in your head that you are not giving up anything except something that is KILLING you!!!  Makes sense, doesn't it?
 
        We'll be here for you throughout the journey, so just holler when you need us!

Hi everyone. I would like to thank all of you for your advice and encouragement! I have decided to move up my quit date and try using the steps I have read here. I will be using the patch, and hopefully it will help. I will keep reading everything I can about the process. I am sure I will be needing more advice! LOL Again, Thank You

        You really ought to quit!  I know that might think that having that smoke might relieve a symptom, but just think about what damage that smoke is doing to you, then the next one, and so on!  I'm sure that there are other things that could relieve a symptom, so research that aspect of it!  The thing is, you are only 62 and with all of the medical conditions you have, you really NEED to quit!
 
        Go through all the milestones in the Program!  Talk to your doctor to find out if you are able to use a NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) product to aid you in quitting.  Then prepare yourself mentally for the task!!!  Quitting smoking will probably be the hardest thing that you will ever do in your life, but if you don't quit, how much and what quality of life will you have left?  Something to think about! 
 
         So, think about it and if you really do want to quit more than you want to smoke, you WILL be able to do this!  AND, we will be here for you every step of the way!  Go through the forums, too, and read and learn and post and prepare!  There is a wealth of information on these threads and remember that knowledge is power!  You will need all the power you can obtain to help you through this process!  
 
         All of us here are living proof that it can be done and you really can do it too!!!

lindy/lou you have come to the right place, all of the previous advise is spot on!  After 40 years of 2 packs a day I never thought I could quit.  I never thought that I would make 3 days let alone 3 weeks.  As you can see here it can be done! It's not always easy but you have plenty of support here.

   25 years, 2 to 3 packs a day, and today I am smober. try and look at it this way, 50 years, or 5 years, you could only smoke one at a time. You have withdrawl everyday just like us quitters do, the only difference is your withdrawl comes every 30 minutes and you feed your addiction. After 180 days, my withdrawl comes maybe once a day, it is weak and I take a deep breath and forget about it. Anyone can quit, but you have to want to. This site has all kinds of info for you. Read the old posts from all the folks who have quit. Everyone here has something to offer. What ever you choose, I wish you the best.

Welcome to our online support community and congratulations on making the decision to quit! I see that you've already received some really great tips from fellow members. Fortunately, this site is always filled with supportive words and useful information to help get you through your quit and make it stick. Go through the program at your own pace, and start planning a reward system for yourself. Don't ever worry about writing too long or venting as we are here to listen and help you every step of the way.
Also, set up your quit meter so you can see your progress and keep motivated.

Welcome to this forum!!
I smoked 15 cigarrettes a day for more than thirty years. So if  I can do it, you can do it too.Nicotine addiction enslave us, dso it is great to regain freedom.
It is a hard but rewarding process. It is probably the most difficult thing I have done but the rewards are huge.I am in control of my life. I broke free from my enslaver.

I recommend you to go trough my program and educaate yoursrelf about your own addiction. The better you know your enemy the easier is to defeat it.
I quit with a winning combination: The Allen Carr Seminar gave me a positive attitude towards quitting. You are not leaaving your best friend behind, you are breaking apart from your enslaver. The book Stop smoking the easy way by Allen Carr covers the seminar.
Chantix. I needed something for my physical addiction.
This wonderful site. Great educators and quitting buddies that understaqnd what you are going trough.,

My quit tips are
lots of ice water
strws cut the size of a cigarrette
deep breathing
a reward system
read and post as needed
lots of rest
hot showers
blubble baths
soft and relaxing musica
celery and carrot sticks
popsicles
a positive attitude
taking one craving at a time. This is a doable task. Lots of people quit smoking. This is the winner attitude
Yell rant cry but don't smoke
write down your 10 reasons to quit and read them every time a craving or smoking tought sneaks in.
You are not alone in this!!!
