THE RAVAGES OF SMOKING

No wonder I didn't see you in your 60's attire. You were dealing with your beloved dog! So sorry to hear about that, and also glad that now all seems okay. It is so hard when a pet is ill, because you can't explain anything to him. It is doubly hard when you are feeling guilty besides. We oblivious smokers choose to deny alot of realities as part of our addiction. Although I never smoked in the house (unless my husband was gone overnight and I thought I could cover it up), I smoked alot in our old car. I subjected my dog to smoke and a husband who (not a smoker) doesn't have good lungs because of asthma as a kid. But did that stop me? Nope. I went merrily along, rationalizing my behavior that I did lots of other things right. Part of that rationalizing is TRUE, though. I am sure that you and Pete gave and are giving JR a wonderful life. He probably would forgive you, if he could. Hope you forgive yourself. Just wishing to thank you all for your kindness. Duffis had to be involved in a conference today and I took JR to the Vet for a follow up this morning. He is coming along as well as can be expected. He evidently swallowed a piece of rawhide chewie and it lodged in his throat. He caughed it up but in the process it tore the lining of his throat and he thinks something is still lodged there. The meds will keep him calmed and the antibotics should heal his throat up. Again thank you for your kindness Pete My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 63 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,904 Amount Saved: $220.5 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 6 Mins: 40 Seconds: 10

Quick up date on JR :) Took him off the pain meds last night and this morning he was up at 0 dark:30 and wanted to go for a walk. Like old times we were out of bed and on our way. Since we returned from the walk JR has hit the sack and is out like a light; he is much better and I thank you one and all for your concerns and kindness. JR tried to die on me yesterday and I spent most of the day at the Vets getting him fixed up. He is still one sick dude but will survive to be his old self again. The vet put him on antibiotics and pain killers. JR is really stoned this morning but feeling no pain LOL. By the time we got settled down Pete and I were exhausted. The Vet thinks that secondary smoke from cigarettes are a big contributing factor to his illness and told me that JR, in addition to his current problem, has COPD but with out very expensive tests won't committ to how bad. I am so dam mad at myself and Pete for smoking around our pets, they are just like children and had no control what so ever as to smoking. They went through withdrawl just like we did, they suffered just as bad as we did quitting. I am really sorry to unload like this but since it has to do with the ravages of smoking may be someone might, just might think about giving up their quits. I don't think that any of us gave or give any thoughts as to how we hurt others with our cigarette smoking. I see a lot of posts where people profess that they do not smoke in their homes but I'd be willing to bet that that is a crock. While I'm on a rant think about this one. We outsource all are work now because industrial america just does not have the time to work as they spend most of the day on smoke breaks........duh. Thanks for listening to the old fart complain. Duffis :(

Duffis- I,too, spent Easter Sunday visiting the vet. I don't think my little guy has a smoking induced condition but , who knows: I'm appalled that I exposed my family (human and 4 legged) to smoking all those years. We are fortunate that our animals are on the mend. Love your JR!!!!! Bless us all as we continue on this quit. Bob my friend, so sorry to hear about JR.........I hope that he is on the mend soon. We lost 2 dogs due to complications from smoking. My poor cat doesn't know what she is in for as DH still smokes. I fear that the smoking I did around my DD and DGD's will some day show up. I wish I could get DH to quit, but he still hangs on to "the demon"....Please keep us up to date on his condition. duffis and pete, I'm so sorry about JR...but I'm sure glad he's improving. They really do become part of the family don't they? I'm a HUGE dog lover and have two that are spoiled rotten. I'm going to throw out those rawhide things TODAY. I never smoked in my house (honest, duffis! lol)...because of my son's asthma.. so I guess that's why I never thought of pets being exposed to smoke. Shevie, your point of them licking their fur is very good. I have a friend that, although she has no (human) children, she has a little dog and she smokes very heavily around him. I'll have to pass that point along to her. Maybe that will be the inspiration she needs to consider not smoking. Bob, So sorry to hear about JR. I believe one of the hardest things about quitting smoking is that we finally face reality. While we were living the junkie life, we always made excuses. When we quit, its like a bright light shining on the idiocy of our smoking years. I doubt there is a person on this site who doesnt pray that they didnt quit too late, that they didnt damage their children, their pets, or their friends. Giving up the guilt is often as hard as quitting smoking.
