Drugs won't work for you

My experience with group therapy was similar. I kept looking to the therapist to control the situation and keep certain members from taking up a lot of time. In the end, I had to speak up myself, after which other members thanked me, but I didn't think that should have been my job. I left the group, then later the therapist more or less told me she couldn't continue to see me unless I rejoined the group, that it was essential to my progress. I left the therapist! As far as professionals telling you that medication won't work for you, that's the most unethical thing I've ever heard. I can only speak for myself, but I truly believe that a combination of meds and talk therapy works best. Taking pills without confronting the roots of the depression isn't enough. From notes posted on this subject, I see that most people have tried several drugs and combinations of drugs. Unfortunately it may take a long time to find what's right for you. The first important step is to find a doctor that you're comfortable with and who sincerely wants to help you, sometimes another long process. Don't be discouraged by your experiences so far, but use them as knowledge when looking for help. Good luck!

Hi jen, im lil and im new this place too. first off i have to apologise in advace, for my grammar and spelling(lol) anyways, in my own personal opinion, i think that was a unproffesional and cruel thing to a person that is suffering from depression. she couldnt be further from the truth. to me, she basically "kicked you while you were down" telling a depressed person that medication wont help is telling them there hopless, that nothing is going to help. Ive been to those support groups for woman dealing with depression and in my expiriences it was a joke. i much rather the one on one you get with a councellor or a psychiatrist. i have never left group therapy feeliong better only more hopeless and frusterated. my advice to you would be this, go to your doctor and ask him to refer you to a phychiatrist. tell your doctor about your expirience and that group therapy isnt your thing, he will be able to set you up with someone he feels is better suited to you. as for the med thing, dont give up hun... im still trying to find the right one for me, and once you do find it, it would have been worth all the trial and error. dont give up sweety :)

I am new to this whole online thing so I'll just pretend that I am writing a letter. I went to a group therapy session today for women with depression. The main problem I have with the group is that the two counsellors who moderate do not effectively manage the time while we are there so the last person or two is rushed or left sobbing as the session ends. Today in particular was bad a badly moderated session but the kicker was when I was leaving, one of the cousellors said to me that she feels that I am one of those people that medications don't work for. The medications I am on are not working and all the previous meds I have been on haven't worked either and she knows that. I have only tried 6 to date. I was really mad that she said that to me and thought it was unprofessional to do so. I also started seeing a new psychiatrist and he said he didn't know what would work for me because nothing I had tried had worked. My question is can a professional ethically say that to a patient? Both comments upset me because I am struggling to get better and remain somewhat optimistic about being able to recover from depression. How can a professional say that to a depressed person? Do they have so little insight into their own field of study? I struggle all the time with the notions of everything being in my own head and that there is something wrong with me, plus all the side effects of meds, I don't need professionals playing devil's advocate. What do you think I should do? Should I confront them or simply find other help? Jen
