SSRI Alternatives

for 20 år siden 0 5 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Over the last 10 years or so, I've been through several of the SSRI's with little or not benefit...just the side effects. The sexual side effects just drove me crazy. About 1 year ago, my pdoc switched me to Wellbutrin. I still had trouble with being tired all the time, so I talked him into adding Provigil. It has been the best combination I have ever had. I still have some low times (like right now) but I'm not as low as I would go without the Wellbutrin and Provigil.

I am a person who has struggled with depression and anxiety for most of my life and who also doesn't like the idea of being dependent on medication. I have used yoga, meditation, reiki, massage therapies and a bunch of other eastern philosophies. I also took Sam E and was on St. John's Wort for years, all were helpful, but none prevented depressive episodes or were a significant help during one. I have been on all of the SSRI's approved to date and every one was a huge failure. When I was recently prescribed Lexipro in addition to the Wellbutrin I was already taking, I was told it was unlike all the others and was not stimulating. It was the worst so far! I had what was the equivelent of a manic episode including no sleep for three days, inability to keep a train of thought, agitation, inability to sit still etc. anyway, I've also been on a few of the tricyclics, but had to come off due to the side effects. I never tried ECT (and never want to), but have finally resigned myself to the fact that I am probably going to have to take medication for the rest of my life. Eveytime I go off, I fall apart. I finally have a combo that works for me without side effects after years of experimentation. It could be worse, I could feel the way I used to!

I just started an alternative treatment that I'll tell you about. I am noticing some early results, but I can't guarantee it will work yet. It's called BodyTalk. If you are open to Eastern medicine it is draws upon some of these principles - yoga, acupunture, chakras etc. The website sounds kind of info-mercially so don't get put off by it. My therapist has recently undergone treatment with this method specifically for a kidney disorder and had amazing results and ended up with a ton of other things in her body being addressed. If you are looking for an alternative to drugs as I am, check it out. Good luck! This message was edited by Josie, Support Specialist on 8/27/2004 @ 10:27:31 AM

I was curious about your map to antidepressant functions, but I was unable connect through the link, or find it through a search. Suggestions?

after five weeks, I (and my doctor) decided that celexa wasn't working for me. the mood uplift was great, but the tiredness, sleeplessness and general lethargy wasn't helping. I'm about to switch to aurorix (moclobemide). anyone have any experience with this?

Antidepressant Map: I prepared this so that I could keep track of what the Doc and I had tried and the "strategy" behind it. I hope this helps as a reference. In my case, I ended up going back to Despramine again and two weeks out I'm feeling like a new person again. I had taken it before and thought I was "cured" and then stopped. The next time I went to a Doc, he sent me to Paxil.. and you can see the rest.Map to Antidepressant Functions

ryan, what can you tell us about your experiences with ativan? I too was prescribed celexa for anxiety - I had no suicidal tendencies or massive depressions - but I'm not liking the side fx. how has the transition made a difference with you?

For anxiety, which is supposedly why i was prescribed celexa to get "better", I find that for my particular brain nothing has a better risk/benefit ratio than lorazepam (Ativan). I have suffered greatly from SSRIs, and also seek any enlightened ideas out there other than allowing psychiatrists to fry or further poison my brain -- it has ehough problems already.

After being on Zoloft, Celexa, and Lexapro (over the last 3 years) I've decided that SSRI treatments provide limited benifit, to me. As 'users' know, the side-effects of SSRI's can be difficult to deal with. Sleep modifications, inability to concentrate, a relative sense of being in a shell... while getting "better". I would like to get some ideas of alternatives to SSRI. Meds or otherwise (herbal, ECT, non-western). Does anyone have any experience with this?
