Well Jane, probably the best advice I can give you is to not panic. Try not to worry about your evaluation until you have it. In the meantime, if you want to keep the job, you could formulate a short explanation telling your boss that you realize you caused a disturbance (if you did) and are working on your problem. Put it on paper, then forget about it until the day of the evaluation. The explanation would make it a whole lot harder for them to fire you, again, if you really want the job. Remember, depression is a disease like all the others. If you have a good physician, he/she should back you up if your boss tries to use your breakdown as a reason to let you go. Once you have that situation diffused, pat yourself on the back for dealing with it. Then start creating a plan for the future, but think in small steps; don't try to do it all at once. That would just create more pressure. If you're bored with the job and feel it's adding to your depression, start thinking about what you really want to do with the rest of your life. Dream a little. Ever thought about going back to school or training for something you've always wanted to do? Challenging, rewarding work can bring focus to an otherwise dark existence. If your medication doesn't seem to be working, tell your doctor. If he/she isn't willing to adjust or change it, find another doctor. It took me many years to find the correct medication, and once I found it, it was like the sun finally rose on my life. I can't promise that kind of reaction for you, but hopefully you'll get more relief than you have been. In the meantime, try to remember that nothing lasts forever, though sometimes it seems it may. Keep battling, keep getting up each morning, and make a plan for the future that you can look forward to. I wish you happiness, and believe you will find it.

I am 31 and have suffered from depression for about 17 years now. On paper my life looks great. I have what appears to be a good, stable job and a very loving and supportive husband. Nevertheless, I still suffer each day and struggle with my depression. When I look more closely at my life I can see some of the cracks. I don't have the best support network. I also am really bored with my job. I just don't have the strength to find another one. I also had my most recent breakdown at work which has complicated matters. I keep thinking that they want to fire me or get rid of me. I am going to have an evaluation in the next few weeks and I am feeling very anxious about it. I think that they will give me a bad one because of my most recent breakdown. I am currently on medication and see a counselor regularly, but it doesn't seem to be working. I am trying to be patient! What can I do? Please help!!

Many people still don't understand that depression has a root cause of chemical imbalance. The chemical imbalance can be triggered or aggravated by small events in the present, or even reminders of bad things that happened in the past. Thus, someone who seems to "have it all" can still become depressed. It happens to me every Christmas season, and I have to prepare myself every year or I spiral down, just like clockwork. This past summer I worked myself off all medications for the first time in years, and was ready to make some significant life changes. Christmas rolled around, and the whole thing came crashing down around me. Just like you, I have a lot to be thankful for: good job, friends, etc. But those "things," though sometimes helpful, can't fend off body chemistry. Find a good doctor that you can trust. That is very important. He/she can tailor a treatment for you that will give you long term relief. In the meantime, keep faith that things will get better. Take it from someone who's been fighting it for 40 years--it can, and will, if you give yourself a chance.

I am a 39 yrs old female and have been on medication for 5 1/2 years. It has been my life saver. See a psychiatrist and get on some medication. It will change your life!

hi my name is kathryn,i have suffered from depression and panic attacks for a good seven years now,i am twenty seven.My depressin has taken a turn for the worse recently but i dont understand why because my life is great too,i have a fantastic understanding partner who supports me in all i do,i cant hold down a job as the very thought of having too work somedays is just the scariest thing ever! i feel i am worthless and i want to be able to work and have a decent lifestyle!! If only there was some escape eh?i left my home town and moved to a different country thinking i may be able to escape and forget bad things back home,all this does is isolate you,things still travel with you in your head,there is no escape!! I think it is just something we have to work through although tough the better times and happier times must be there somewhere.

i am a 40 yr old female that as only been self dianosed for clinical depression, I have been checked for everything medical to see why i have no energy, i even had an aids test knowing it wasn't going to be that. I am in a good relationship with my husband who is one of the best people you would want to meet, i have a lot of friends but i always feel like i am bugging them instead of having a conversation with them. I cant seem to hold a job or lately even get the energy to go look, My house is a mess and the dishes are piled high in the sink and all i want to do is runaway, it has to be better somewhere else don't it? but I really dont understand my wanting to run away, cause down deep I dont want too. I love my husband and dont want to lose him but I feel he could do so much better with someone else. but then again it takes too much energy to change to be that someone for him, unbelieveably he dont mind that I am a lazy worthless bum, ain't that strange???
