Birth Control and Depression

Lisa in Athens, GA, Wholly cow. That is soooo very interesting. I would say that my depression has been getting steadily worse for the past five months. And, while reading your post, I realized that I started taking Yasmin birth control pills like four months ago. I am now very curious if this might be the reason. I think I'm going to give my doctors a call.

I have had similar problems where I get depressed the week I am about to start my period ... my doctor's office recommended that I take Vitamin B-6 every day (not just that week) to counteract this problem. I have been taking it for about 4 months and it has helped!

lisa-t, how weird you mention this. My boyfriend has asked me the same thing. He says that my depression has gotten worse since I started taking BCPs. I started Yasmin in October because my periods were so close together (every 17-19 days). Then I ended up going on ADs at the end of December. I say coincidence. I would be interested in other feedback.

I've been told by several doctors (therapist and psychiatrist) that birth control pills have been known to cause depression. I'm not able to go off of them at this time because I take them due to a uterine fibroid. You might want to talk to your doctor about it to see if there is an alternate form of BC that is recommended, or maybe even just switching to a different brand of pills.

I am new to this site and have some questions. If anyone has any thoughts I'd appreciate your opinions. I've been being treated for depression for 9 years now. Started with Prozac which worked for 6 years. Then immediately stopped working. Since then, we've tried Wellbutrin, Lamital, Lexapro and a few others. Nothing seems to be working too well and we are about to embark on a new regimen as soon as I'm off the Lexapro. But one thing has us both concerned. During the week that I'm "supposed" to get my period (I hardly ever get it), I find that I sink into a deep depression. I usually don't even make the connection between the depression and my period until toward the end of the week for some reason. It's happened a few times. I know when I'm supposed to get my period because I'm on birth control and I take the pill for 21 days and stop for 7. Have any other women in this group had similar experiences? What have your doctors (psychiatrists and gyns) recommended? I appreciate any thoughts on the matter. Regards. Lisa-T.
