Treatment Resistant

for 19 år siden 0 11 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Recently there was a Reuters acticle about the use of deep brain stimulation used to treat people with unresposive depression. This is a surgery where they place an electrode deep in your brain and some battery electronics by your colarbone to run the electrode. They have used it for parkinsons disease and epilepsy before this. I saw someone wiht parkinsons disease recieve this surgery on a tv surgery show. They keep the patient awake in the parkinsons case so that they can have the patient write with a pen while they move the electrode around. Eventually they found a spot where the lady getting the surgery could write without her hand shaking. The results from this surgery on the unresponsive to typical treatment depression people was promising. They only did it o 6 people. 5 of them felt immediate clamness after the surgery and 4 or the 6 are still feeling great some time later (a year or something). Anyway go read the article for proper details. Google "deep brain stimulation in the treatment of unresponsive depression". I have not tried as many medications as most of you guys. I've only tried Effexor for 2 years, Divalproex (simltaeous with effexor) for 1.5 years, Seroquel (simultaneous with both of those) for 8 months, and now Wellbutrin for one month. Unfortunately none of these medications seem to do anything good for me. I guess it is on to the next. I am going to try some psychotherapy , support groups, and alternative medicine (fish oils, accupunctire, heart rate coherency, anything!). Athough I am skeptical about alternative medicine, I'm pretty skeptical about antidepressants as well. None of them have prooven long term effectiveness and the short term studies aren't very convincing. People in the studies and monitoring them usually can tell if one is on placebo or not because of the obvious sideeffects of the antidepressants. Anyway next week I am going to be switching from Wellbutrin to Celexa. Trying to be hopefully. l8r Psysick

I can relate: I've been on Parnate, Prozac, Wellbutrin, Manerix, Effexor, Lamictal, Celexa, etc. etc. However, some of the combos gave me some relief for some long p[eriods of time. Some also sent me manic. Don't give up....the answer for you is out there. Dave

Hi, Mbavon, So sorry to hear you're having so much trouble finding something that works well for you. You mentioned episodes of depression. Does that mean the pills are working at one point, but then you stop taking them when you're feeling better?? For myself, I have *finally* learned that it's best for me just to stay on them. The climb back out of the hole is harder each time I go through it. Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you.

I know how you feel!.I have been on Clonipramine ( an outdated drug was on it years ago), paxil, luvoxx, currenly on trazadone, and lorazepam, ( used to take clonazepam) and recently put on Wellbutrin as well.I have a myriad of Pychological problems, Namely severe clinical depression, Bulimia, and ADHD.. had it since I was 8 years old. Either Wellbutrin is not the drug for me or I need a higher dosage.. on Friday I am going to talk to my doc about this.I know how frustrating it is, you get hopeful , and just pray that the newest med will work and when it dosen't you wonder how many 100's of meds you are going to have to try before you find one that works.I am in that same frame of mind right now... I guess all we can do is keep trying!.Good luck ;) Kristin

Hi mbavon I was also in the unfortunate position to use plenty of tablets. Unfortunately, I am back on Efexor and the normal other stuff. I am currently staying in a country in Africa where the health care system is limited. I can tell you though that I had acu-puncture about three years ago and I could not believe the difference after three treatments. (I had 17 total.) I was fine for about 8 months without using any medication. Sleeping well and just functioning well all over. I was then transferred to where I am now and do not have the facilities here. Good luck

Thank you..My job is very memory driven and I cannot to lose it even for the short term so I have to rule ECT out.

I thought I was treatment resistant too. I've been on all the meds you mentioned and thensome. The only thing that has worked for me is ECT. They know that it works for people with really tough depression, thats why it is approved by the FDA, sanctioned by the APA and NAMI. I know how frustrated you must feel not to get any relief from all the meds and I know the idea of ECT is probably very scarry, but its the best thing that ever happened to me. Good luck and take care.

What does one do when you have tried almost all meds available and continue to have episodes of depression ? I have been on a the ssris,Wellbutrin, Remeron, combos which included Seroquel, Depakote, lithium and Lamactil....Now what ?,,,,Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. I've been plagued with depressive episodes on and off since 1992.
