Brett, I was on Effexor once and was desperate to stay off of it so I visited a counselor. She referred to it as "side effexor". I didn't even know what vertigo was until she told me that was what I had experienced. During the experience I would just roll around on the floor and ball that my head wasn't working. Anyways...I did experience the entire published list of side effects with Effexor. (My mom though likes it just fine...but I don't think she has a sex life.) I also once went on a strict Atkins diet and two things happened: I lost weight entirely too fast, it gave me headaches...but my mood was awesome. I have since noticed limitting or excluding sugars and caffiene greatly improve my mood for the following day. Of course alcohol and depression is a no, no...and my mood does suffer for more than a couple of days after alcohol consumption (but that might be the sugar intake too). I used to get pamphlets from the University's Student Health Department that had a huge list of everything you should do and not do. MMcDaniel

Thanks for the post, Bob. I am in a similar situation. Diagnosed wiith Major Depression four years ago, on meds for all but the last six months. Meds did help, but I always hated the idea of needing a pill to get through the day and the side effects that went with them. Looking at trying something else before I surrender to meds again. I was on Effexor - if anyone else has had experience with that drug. I have a stressful job -- a good one, that I love -- but one that is very time and energy demanding, and very public. Exercise has also helped, but I don't always have the time to do it, and that starts the downward cycle of depression again. Does anyone have a particular diet or certain foods that are natural anti-depressants? I am new to the site, so I apologize if that info is somewhere I haven't looked yet. Thanks for your feedback, and best wishes to you all.

Bob, There is apparently a list of 100 and some things you can do besides medication to aid the battle against depression. The ones I've tried are journaling, diet adjustment, sunlight exposure, caffiene restrictions, and exercise....a good counselor would have this list available...or if you have EAP (Employee Assistant Program) or other mental health benefit through work...they would also have this list.
