Lithium?

for 14 år siden 0 2 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I am taking 1200 mgs a day of lithium. The only side effects I've noticed is my hair falls out and I've gained a litttle weight. Other than that I've tolerated it well.

You said you're on 1350 mg. Well, I don't think it has to do much with dosage, but it's possible because everyone reacts differently on this medication, but, I was on 600 mg of Lithium and I had the same side effects you listed. Correction in my middle paragraph. Sorry. I put mg, but didn't have the number there.

freefall,

I was prescribed lithium, and although I am not taking it now, I did at one time. My experience with the side effects was very negative, so I decided to get off it.

Side effects I had:
Body shaking/trembling
Hand tremors ( I too would have a hard time drinking from a cup, before I got even close to bring it to my mouth, I would spill it all over me)
Facial twitching
Involuntary muscle movements (my legs would give out beneath me and I would fall)
Constipation
Hair drying out and falling out
Gaining a lot of weight

If these are your experiences as well, you have to assess your symptoms with your care provider and discuss the severity of the side effects and how they make you feel. Sometimes the costs outweigh the benefits.

You said you're on mg. Well, I don't think it has to do much with dosage, but it's possible because everyone reacts differently on this medication, but, I was on mg of Lithium and I had the same side effects you listed. So, I am not 100% sure on what you should do, but if the side effects are becoming a serious worry or a terrible inconvenience, then I would suggest lowering the dosage. Also, and most importantly, talk with your health care provider. Be assertive and don't be ignored. I told my doctor that I needed a reduction on the amount of meds I was taking, and they arrogantly told me thats not what I needed and that I will stay on the meds. That is ridiculous!! Only you, the client/consumer, if you will, can dictate the details of their treatment plan. Mental health specialists are there to help guide you and make suggestions for treatment, not dictate or tell you what treatment to go with.

Jan I'm wrong. I'm on 1350 of lithium. I think that is a lot. Nobody that I have talked to on any chat board is taking that much. Maybe he has me on too much. Maybe that's the problem ... I'm taking too much. I'm on so many meds that it's hard to keep track of the dosages and side effects. I don't even know what half of them are for. I'm sure that he's tolk me what they're for. I just have a memory problem.

Jan Thank you for sharing with me. I don't feel so alone. I take 1125 mg. of lithium a day plus lamictal and abilify. I've been on lithium for over a year now. I can handle many of the side effects of the meds, but, shaking like this is really annoying. I need to ask my psych. why I'm on so much lithium and if he can cut me down. If not, I guess that I'll learn to deal with it. Thanks again.

Hi freefall, I am also on Lithium - 600mg. How much are you on? I used to get really shaky and of course wasn't sure which drug caused it but it seems to have subsided for the most part although it did take along time for that to happen? Are you on any other drugs? I also take effexor and wellbutrin? Have you asked your doctor about the side effect? I also used to lose my balance when I first started taking lithium, I couldn't walk straight, kept falling over - lol. It was pretty scary though. Then I was on 900mg - they cut it back after that to 600mg? Anyway, isn't life grand??? Side effects can definately be annoying but sometimes we just have to persevere? I guess you should really talk to your doctor but I thought I would share my experience. Hope it has helped somewhat? Take care Jan ;)

The lithium causes me to shake so bad that I can't hold a full glass of water. I shake so bad that I can no longer drive. It does work for me, but the side effects are rough. Anyone else with any experience with lithium?
