Hi Davey, I really feel for you, buddy. Your story sounds a lot like my early years. (I am 43 now and am actually going through a moderate depression right now) anyway, I had my first severe depression when I was 16, then almost annually until I finally got diagnosed and on meds at 27. I was an alcoholic from the time I tasted it as a teen and eventually quit at 30. What I really wanted to tell you about, though, is that there IS HOPE for social phobia/ performance anxiety. Social anxiety was the reason I quit college. and quit after a second attempt although it was a long coming, I finally went back at 32 years old, conquered the social anxiety thing with buspar and some very diligent cognitive and other type therapies. I was only on buspar for maybe 9 months while I got good at the psychotherapy practices. I actually was able to feel comfoortable in class discussions whereas I once felt as if I would have to be carried out of the room on a stretcher if I had to speak. I ended up getting a B.A. in psychology. I just wanted you to know that things CAN change for the better. A person has to find the right tools and even then it may not be easy. I am in your corner, Davey God bless you

Dave, You've come to the right place! Please feel free to roam the site at your own pace. If you look to the left of the screen under "PROGRAM TOOLS" you'll find our Depression Test. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. This may better assess your situation. You may also want to check out our sister site to help you with information on anxiety. Please go to www.paniccenter.net If you ever have any questions or concerns please click the "CONTACT US" link at the bottom of the page. We're open to any questions or concerns you may have. Josie ____________________________________ The Depression Center Support Team.

Davey, Welcome to the site! There are a lot of compassionate, caring people on this site. I'm glad you're seeking medical help. Just make sure you keep your doctor informed about side effects you may experience. We have enough issues to deal with without adding side effects to the mix. I (and I know many others on this site) go to counseling for our depression as well as some others for addiction. It seems to be a byproduct for many with depression. If you find a good psychologist, it can be very helpful. Also, make sure to surf this site and take advantage of the great tools they have here. Keep us updated. Kelly

Hi everyone, I'm a 20-year-old guy who has problems with depression and social anxiety. They started in high school but only got especially bad over the past couple of years, starting with panic attacks and leading to alcoholism, finally escalating to me attempting suicide on separate occasions. I have been put on Effexor; it has done a reasonable job controlling my suicidal urges and severe depression but I still have a lot of trouble with social anxiety and moderate depressive symptoms. Soon I will to be going to addictions counselling for the alcoholism, hope it will help.
