Star, I am glad that your son is getting the services he needs at school. I can imagine that summers are difficult. In my school district with a partial day summer program for kids that need it and that helps. I suffer more from anxiety than anything else, but the anxiety makes me depressed. Life is hard with either... Try to keep yourself in a routine this summer...that's the biggest thing that I see kids with autism need...a routine...otherwise they have meltdowns. I know routines are hard when you just don't feel like doing anything some days, but one thing that made a lot of sense to me that I read here on this program is that sometimes we have to force ourselves to do things and then hope we will feel good about it so that next time we will have motivation. This is how it for me and exercise. I don't like to do it, but I do feel better if I force myself to do it and then the next time I am more motivated to do it again. I haven't exercised lately so it's time for me to just do it whether I want to or not. Anyway, I hope that summer will be better than you expect and that you can find some joy to help ease the depression. Melody

Hi Melody, My kids are in school. They are in grades 5, 4, 2, My autistic son does not go for a full day but almost. He has a modified curriculam because they cannot just fail people because they are special needs. He has support workers and one of them is Melody.Summer will be tough because he will not have school and friends.I am trying to get some things to do like wagon rides and we have a big trampoline with the enclosure.Plus we live close to two lakes he likes throwing rocks at the water.Life is way harder when you are depressed and it makes it seem imposible to get ahead in life. Star, I read your introduction and as a special education teacher, my heart goes out to you because I know what a challenge autism can be for anyone. Does your son go to school? Contact your local school district and get help. They have to either have a program for him or they will have to pay for private school tuition...that's the IDEA law. Schooling will help him and it will give you a break as well. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Melody

Hi, I am a married Mom of three boys 11, 9, 7. My 7 year old has severe autism and is nonverbal. This makes it hard to go anywhere. He screams alot and spits.Sometimes I feel as though I wish I could work outside the home at least I would have an escape from the kids and an excuse to not getting anything done.Depression has stolen my energy.I feel like I am suffocating i have a pressure in my throat like someone is pressing against it.I hope to get stuff done but I always feel so unimportant.
