Whynot! I feel so bad for what you are suffering through. Nicorette gum! Nicorette inhalers! I would be insane if I didn't find those ways for quitting smoking, and even though it has been over two years since I touched a smoke, I still chew the gum all day long. It is like your pacifier, your sucky, and when you take it away, it is very hard to find a replacement especially if you are already not feeling good. I swear by the gum and if I have to chew it for the rest of my life to feel calm and in control, well, it doesn't hurt you and it's WAY cheaper than smoking. Try it and I wish you strength! L.

Whynot: I know what you mean about finding it hard to look for support, for fear of how people will respond. I just wanted to post a reply and say that I hope it gets a little easier for you, but that you're very brave to be making so many tough decisions - including quitting smoking - that is a really important one. And starting to reach out here as well. You clearly do care about your family to be taking steps like this. I don't really know how your situation with your doctor is, but wouldn't the final decision on any meds or treatment etc. be your own? So perhaps you could tell him/her how you're feeling over the quitting smoking but tell them how important it is to you to handle it in a particular way, ie. to avoid the problems you mentioned. I hope this doesn't sound like advice because I really am in no position to offer any, but I wish you could have many options and many avenues of support, and if the doctor can offer you any at all it might be worth exploring. That said, I'm not very good at going and getting the help so I really don't want to be telling anyone else how to make these difficult decisions. I guess the bottom line is, again, I really wish you all the support and success in the world and to say how great it is that you are doing these difficult things for your family, and yourself. Ava

Whynot, Welcome to the Depression Center! Please start working through our CBT program. It will teach you about depression and it's effects on you. It will also help you start goal-setting. If you have any questions, just ask. Know that this is a safe place, no judgment, just support. Danielle ________________________ The DC Support Team

OK, here goes. Although I was diagnosed with depression the first time 14 years ago, I have been off all meds for 6 years now. Last going off, my diagnosis was Bi-Polor and I was put on Prozak. I was pregnant at that time, and became so unhappy with the way my meds made me feel, that I stopped taking them. However, 18 days ago, I quit smoking and, oh boy, is it every coming back. Only I don't know how to deal anymore. I don't want to go back on meds, I just want someone to talk to. I have always been afraid to try a support group, afraid of being laughed at i suppose. But for my families sake, and mine, I need to do something. It can't keep going on like this. I cry all the time, hide in my room, and won't talk to anyone, or go anywhere unless I have too. And I will NOT tell the doctor. Last time, they made it worse in their t=search for the right diagnosis and meds. I went from mild depression to bi-polor and hospitialized. I don't want to go through that again. Someone, please help me to live again.
