Hi all! damn the stigma of depression! DL i admire you for speaking up about this subject. I've been taking meds for about 7 years and they have been a life saver for me. After a few years i tried going off them with doctors approval. Did in the summer when my chances for seasonal depression would be lessoned. it didn't last long and i was happy to go back on the pills. i am forgetful at times but, not usually for more than a day or two. There is certainly a place for legitimate holistic and natural approaches, and in my humble opinion they should be combined with "western" medicine whenever possible. If taking anti-depressants makes me a freak then i shall wave my banner high at the freak parade!! DL- thanks also for advocating

Daily, Thank you for sharing your experience. If I may add, it is important to continue to work with your doctor and pharmacist regarding dosages, and side effects :) Josie, Support Specialist

hi DailyL. When I was younger I did the "natural" thing as well.. and camomille does not help Migraine! So Now, all medication is not a judgement of what kind of person I am -crazy, establishment, conformist, addict- it is all amatter of finding the solution that works for me... Meds for depression, antibiotics to prevent secondairy infections in my children, pain management... I admit, in the past 2 years of effexor I missed 3 pills! Once recently and it reminded me why I have been so faithfull. It is just as bad as missing the OJ and coffee in the moring (OJ for breakfast and coffee for the traffic).

Hi all, There has been one essential factor in my staying stable for so many years free from major dives into MDD. It is the exact regularity of taking my SSRIs every single day without fault. Like Sandy, I have been on the same one since it first came on the market in the late 80s. I went on an overseas teaching job in '98 and stopped all pills (arthritis, chronic pain and depression and HBP and high cholestrol.) That was the worst three months of my adult life and the shortest contract I've ever broken. I went 'holistic' and fell into a heap and couldn't function... I returned to Canada on sick leave and it took me months to get straight again... Now I take my meds without fail every day. It's not clear to me from reading the posts but I have a feeling that some of us are missing our meds from week to week in the hope that we can, somehow, 'come out of it all and be cured'. I know that this sounds like preaching to the choir but I need to fix it in my head that my mental chemistry (serotonin) is not what it was when I was a kid... I need the inhibitors to keep a balance in my brain. I've seen the badly hidden face-pulling of people who believe that one should "live without [pills" and all that... well, they don't live in my head so I don't care anymore what they think ... Keep taking the pills folks...
