Hi Kitt,

Welcome to the site :-)  I had to put my good friend down last August (day before my birthday!).  I have to say, that was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.  We got her from the SPCA when she was 2 yrs old, and she was with us for 15 years in total.  I wasn`t one to just hand her over to the vet, I actually held her until she passed.  It is extremely difficult to do, but if your little kitty is struggling to stay alive like mine was, it is the most humane thing.  Our friend Patrick has given you some very wise advise.  I couldn`t get another cat right away, however, we recently went back to the SPCA and found this beautiful kitten (5 mos old), and even though she`ll never replace our beloved "Stormy", she is a pleasure to have around, and we saved another life.  Hang in there Kitty, our thoughts are with you. Sincerely, Tracy (Exhausted)

Hi Kitt,

If your beloved old pal is in pain  then you will probably have to do as you say, you'll have to put him down... But, what I recommend
is that you go straight from the vet's office to the SPCA kennels and save another little cat that catches your eye...
think of it as Pally's cat-soul passing from him into this new cat.  Do it as a homage to your old pal!!

The depression and anxiety playing on each other has what I would imagine is a pretty simple psychological answer!?
Fear plays a great part in either and both afflictions. You fear that because you're depressed that you'll never improve
and so you get anxious about the recalcitrance of the depression. This anxiety remains after the trough of the depression
has passed and then you fear that the anxiety will never go away - this makes you depressed and so on in a vicious circle.

Be kind to the  Puss and then be kind to yourself...

hi kitty, you know there is another way to look at your cat's situation. Our animals are lucky in that they are not forced to live in pain, suffering and solitude that people are subjected to in hospitals. You know that it is the loss of your best friend that hurts the most. And maybe "putting down" "killing" and -murder- are expressions of guilt. I had to let my Kookie go when he was ill at 12 yrs of being there for me... he endured my two depressions and loved me without condition - even when I forced him to the Vet to be FIXED... I survived one cycle of Heat at it was enough, he was a sports model after that... He moved with me, he waited for me after school, work, and studies... He even taught my son to respect animals. So after Kookie I had to keep the house animal free for 5 years. Now my children have Tigre-botte. that is their story. I hope you remember that a depressed immunine system is a symptome of depression... so your flu is just another part of the whole you are. Lack of motivation is a symptome of the flu and depression. and a difficult situation with your best-friend is stressing you out. Depression is one part environmental - what happens to us, what and how we think, and one part genetic/chemical. Anxiety is the same ... and anxiety and depression are chemical imbalances in three major brain communicators. Often, a generalized anxiety disorder is were one worries all the time about everything - and wears themself out (like me) and then fall into exhaustion ... of course when i find my energy i spend it on checking, accumulating and washing (i have OCD as well). okay the kids are driving me fruity gotta go

Hi everyone, I made a pretty distressed post last week "I Think I'm depressed" and I'm not too sure where it went to. It seems to have vanished! Anyways, I'm not feeling suicidal anymore. But I'm still having difficulty coping with some pretty stressful events in my life. The main one being that I have to consider putting down my cat in the next few days. She has a chronic illness that is getting worse. I could probably keep her alive, but I'm looking at paying $500/month or more to do so. So it's very difficult because I see it as me "killing him" just because of the money, which makes me feel AWFUL. I do have the money to pay for it, but at the expense of any savings/RRSPs/or anything other than "basic" food and shelter expenses. I am a cat person (hence my nickname) and my cat has been with me longer than my spouse! I know this sounds crazy, but he's my best friend. I hope there are a few people out the that could understand...I have the flu, which probably does not help my outlook. I've started doing the daily activity journal. I've done it in the past sporatically. But this time I hope to keep it up. I think I do have depression. All I do in my spare time (ie 7 hrs/day) is sit on the couch and watch tv I don't even always like! I've been diagnosed with clinical depression in the past. I'm not sure what brought it on. I was diagnosed for the first time with an anxiety disorder last summer and since then have had many successes in dealing with it. I've heard people say before that anxiety and depression play on one another. I'm very curious as to what this means. Does anyone know or have experience with this?
