Welcome to the forum. I was also very against taking antidepressants at first. I didn't want all those horrible chemicals in me. But as my doctor told me, if you had an infection, you would take antibiotics. Sometimes it is just a chemical imbalance in the brain and the tablets help you to function while you sort out the emotional stuff. You could try taking Omega 3 fatty acids so long. All the best with following the program and keep us posted......

Thanks everyone for your input. You are a great bunch of caring people. An  uplifting tonic.

I have no idea whether it is menopause or not. I take HRT and have done for nearly 20 years. Had thyroid checked out and it is ok

Will try peppermint tea - by the gallon. Thanks Rose

Good advice Mom of3 - Thanks

hi stardust,

I feel a bit more confortable with the pro/com med topic today.
I know that these meds are serious, and are not for a little headach that comes with needing a nap.  Many have seconary effects are YOU will find unpleasant.
But!!! Medication is there to help you.  For a certain amount of time, it allows you to think clearly and allows to work out all the issues that made you depressed - along with the genetic predisposition.  So you have a chance to learn to deal with stress. You have a moment to heal those emotional wounds.  You have the space you need to deal with all those people in your life. Then -slowly- you learn to live life on your terms.  With medication. With less medication.  With suppliments. All Natural.

I am Bipolar, I guess when I was younger I just suffered in miserable silence.  I have always been Depressed and life was/is to be endured.  I have thyroid problems as well... And I spent years on my known.  I spent all that time thinking I was worthless and sub-human.  I knew I had errors in my thinking patterns so once or twice a year I would see a therapist to help me out of the worst of my mood-cycles and I would survive.  And now as my kiddies get older and need two parents full time.  I cannot afford to give myself up to this illness.  I have sought medication and full time help.  I am beginning medications and psychiatric following.  So it is all an adventure for me ... and on the dark days I try to remember that I am in it for the kiddies and have to take the pills and get the sleep and stay away from the alcohol...

so I am trying both.

Hi Stardust,

Welcome!  Medication can be helpful and is helpful in many cases.  Natural vs Prescription medicine is a frequent concern for people.  The results of prescription medications are well studied and documented.  Many of the natural remedies are not.  The effectiveness for all of these are varied from person to person.  You must consider the information you have and your comfort level with use vs your symptoms and quality of life without.  I don't like taking anything but recent panic attacks sent me back to using the medication I have (which I don't think is very effective).  At least I am calmer and the attacks have calmed or are manageable at least.

Exercise is an important part of the equation for me.  It might help me to get back to that more frequently.

Anyway, I just wanted to say welcome.  You found a great bunch of people here

hi stardust - are you sure it's the big D and not menopause or thyroid problems? delusional is such a great word isn't it? don't be afraid of meds though, they help if it's really depression. i love peppermint tea and probably am addicted to that

Big thanks to everyone who replied. I will certainly work through the prog.  It can only help and boy oh boy do I need it. Funny thing is I don't recall how I managed to get to this site but really grateful that I did.

I have been reading a few pages of the prog and it gave me hope and even a smile
