Can depression be predicted?

I think it was very interesting. They have found genetic markers for all types of diseases.  This seems to relate to that and just shows an indicator that there may be a positive correlation between the family hx of depression and as a result how the brain develops.  There are many other diseases in which this occurs.  i.e. breast cancer hx and the development of breast cancer.
Of course this report indicated the information was based on one study and the validity and reliability of the study is not available (at least via my internet searches).  I am interested in hearing about other studies on the subject.

I also think as with many other disorders that environment does play a role.  I don't think that this study excluded that.  It indicated that a person with a family hx is more likely to develop depression and this information may be able to predict if a person could develop depression.   This is also true of a person with alcoholism and a family history.  Being exposed to the effects of a disease (mental illness) can also play a part in learned behavior and/or responses.

Interesting....

I think it has to do more with upbrining - - if you learn bad ways of handling things it is hard to know how to be positive

Members,

There is a very interesting video on CNN.com. It discusses the link between brain make up and depression. There has been a study that implies we can actually predict who is more likely to have depression if we examine the make up of their brain. Take a look: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/health/2009/03/31/seg.gupta.depression.cnn?iref=videosearch

What do you think about the video? Do you think depression has more to do with brain make up or your upbringing?
