The site has helped me by giving me a place to come where I feel like people understand and are in the same boat as me. It's really comforting and refreshing. The program also guides me and gives me structure. Reading posts has also been very beneficial for me.

azbrowneyes, I look forward to hearing how the sessions are going for you.  There is a place to post questions if you run into problems.  the moderators seem to be able to help us work through the parts that we find difficult or don't understand.  It is a valuable resource as well.

goofy,
Thanks so much for all of your encouragement.  It's actually nice to have someone say I'm not stupid and just do it.
anyway, your words have been helpful!

azbrowneyes,
From my experience, though you may hear about my current struggles, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose.  Three years ago I was in the worst state I've ever been in.  I didn't go anywhere, didn't see/talk to my friends, couldn't work, had quit school, (dig go to the Dr for anti-depresant, anti=anxiety meds).  My mother was my POA and after her death my son.  (POA - Power of Attorney - meaning they handled all my personal affairs as I couldn't at that point).
I stumbled upon this program as I was searching for answers that I wanted and I wanted them at that moment.  At first, I quickly tried to hurry through, thinking I have to get better now.  I learned that for me, I was moving too quickly and I started again....even reading the stuff about depression again.  I took my time, worked the sessions thoroughly, took notes, made copies, started seeing a therapist, taking meds, seeing psychiatrist.  Accepting invitations, stated meditating, doing tai chi, exercising (3 minutes the frist day - I celebrated!), not all at once but over time.
Current state, I'm on session 9, I'm having a set back, but I'm more resilient, I have a great support group, resources to turn to in the sessions, and I plan to work the program again.  I don't think CBT (opinion) is just to run through and be cured.  As the course of my diagnosed depression is life long, so is the CBT.
I know at times it doesn't seem what you are doing in the sessions is relevant or useful, but it will be later in the sessions.  The more thorough the better.  Take you time.  Just because it says a week, doesn't mean it has to be a week.
I think you've got nothing to lose and lots to gain.  Keep an open mind.

also, i really don't mean to come across as a "know it all".  I only got through the introduction of the program and the day I looked into I was looking for some quick answers.  I am willing to continue through the program for the help that I need and I know I will learn so much by giving it a chance.  What have I got to lose, right?

just wanted you all to know I didn't disappear, no one offended me, and I am doing okay.

Hi there,

I agree, the benefit you get from this site ultimately depend on how you choose to use it. Some of the information included on the site may be things you already know but if you stick with the program and use the support group it can really help. This site has been just what I needed to help me really make a life change. Also knowing that people support me through this journey is a huge thing in itself.

Hopefully you will be able to benefit as much as I do azbrowneyes!

Hi azbrowneyes,

Thank you for sharing. The program is designed to allow people of all knowledge levels to benefit and participate. The important thing is that you use the program in a way that will benefit you, got through the program, if something is irrelevant to you then move on. Use the support groups to post your experiences and get support from fellow members. We appreciate hearing from you about the program, if you have any concrete suggestions we would be more than happy to consider them. Feel free to send us any suggestions through the feedback feature.

azbrowneyes,

Having been a counselor for almost 20 years, I found the information in this program to be saying things I already knew.  However, in desperation, I was willing to work even the simplist program.  lol, it isn't simple....it's challenging, it you want to do it right, you need to take your time (I don't agree with the "next week" agenda.....but the mods and the program says work at your own pace.  Well,  I could have gotten it done in 9 weeks, but I'm over a year into it and on session 9.  Along the way I've used the other sessions (sometimes more than once) and I'm going back to Session 1 when I get finished with the last one.  I'm not insulted nor are the others thta you feel like it's quite elementary.  Remember, not everyone who comes here has been dealing with deression for years, may not have a diagnosis, or like me, knows alot about it, but can't seem to get it unjumbled in my head (still working on that).

It sounds like you've got alot of adjustments occurring in your life.  The daughter going off to college is a tough one.  I rremember when my son left (he was only 2.5 hours away).  I was upset for days/weeks.  That was pre-depression.  I wasn't diagnosed with depression until he was in law school 5 years later.  It seems we focused on our kids, our lives revolved around them, their activities, where they were, what they were doing and mostly because we wanted to know if they are safe!  We don't have that focus of all their activities, it's a test of sorts to us - did we do everything we wanted/needed to do/ anxiety about is she going to be okay, It's definitely a tough tough tough thing to go through.  I can only tell you that as you have said that bond doesn't disipate, it grows stronger.  My son is 30 now and we are closer now than then and I never thought we could be closer!

I'm sure the "empty nest" is causing your focus to shift more toward your husband.  It's like you open your eyes and and see a different person.  Don't make any rash decisions.  Remember the reasons you fell in love with him in the first place (he's sitting in that chair).  Share with him your fears, your anxieties over your daughter, take a hug, a pat a gently touch or a kiss when offered.  Those can be reassuring.

And as for WHY?  I guess it's because we all have some type of health issues throughout life and it's those dern neurotransmitters that went haywire on me.  You know I'm not making light of the depression.  I think trying to figure out why keeps our focus off what can I do about it.  And if you knew why?  would it change?

I'm full of opinions, open to feedback, don't intentionally insult someone.  Hang in there azbrowneyes.  I'd love to hear a bit about your daughter (i.e. how far away is she going to  school (miles, kilometers), what do you think she wants to study?, is she excited about being there?   met new friends, like her classes, what does she tell yo about most when she calls?  I hope she is enjoying her experience at school!  What a great start you are giving her in life!
