Just wanted to say hi and that I completely understand how you feel, since that's exactly how I felt just a few months ago!!! I agree, I'm only in session 2 of the CBT but it's really practical, helping me understand my depression and anxiety and how to move forward. I'm feeling some hope. It's also great to visit the support groups and see what has helped others as well.

Sure you can add me to your buddy list.  That is a new feature since I worked the sessions, but would be glad to be your buddy and learn how to use the "buddy list" at the same time.

correction:  CBT most effective tx for major depression!  See not all the thought processes work the greatest anymore - but at least they work!  lol

Hi C633,  I don't have my glasses on, I hope I got the ID right.  lol

Glad you are here!  CBT is scientifically proven to be the most effective therapy for CBT (from what I've read).  I've also personally worked this program for MDD, diagnosed appr. 2004.  It is been very very very helpful and helped me to get my life back on track even living with MDD.  

I can understand why a person might utilize alcohol to self-medicate but the fact that you recognize that is what you are doing is a great first step.  I suggest that you discuss this with your doctor, it may be the medications are not working anymore or need adjusted.  I don't know where you are from, but there is a sister site to this one for alcohol dependency that you might find useful.  There are also alcohol treatment programs.  Admitting there is a problem is the first step.

You have to take care of you first, I know it sounds selfish, but your health (treatment for MDD and potential addiction to alcohol) comes first.  After I started taking care of myself, then I was able to have a more fulfilling relationship with those around me.  It's been a long haul.  This program was the catalyst, the sessions work.  I've been hanging around for a couple of years now, worked through the sessions, still come back for the support and encouragement and to give an opinion like some awesome folks did for me when I first came here.  

One more opinion - lol, I'm full of them - talk therapy has been essential, in addition to my medications and this program.  There are a few other things I've been able to start doing as a result of working the sessions, taking my time and utilizing The Depression Center to the fullest.  Things like appreciating the little things, started dating again, went back to work.  I also exercise now and find many things enjoyable I didn't in the "throws of the depression".  

I hope this helps.  I'm glad you are here.  Keep posting!  Work the sessions at your own pace, use the resources available and check out that sister site. I've known others who do both!!!!

I was diagnosed with MDD about three years ago and have been undergoing treatment ever since.  Initially it was counseling, then meds with counseling, now just meds.  For the last several months I have been increasingly using alcohol as a supplement and I think I'm developing a dependency.
 
Apart from financial challenges, everything is OK in my life.  I have a good, reliable job; my marriage isn't on the rocks; and I'm reasonably healthy.  My biggest issue is that I can't seem to find happiness.  Life to me seems like it's just an existence, blah and boring.  I have tried to find new things to learn, new hobbies, to develop new talents, but any gratifiaction that I get from those activities is very short lived.  I'm not content with my life but I seem powerless to do anything about it.  Year after year I look back on where I've been and I can't seem to make any progress.  I'm in 'life sucks and then you die' mode and I don't find life worth living any more.  I'm not suicidal ... I don't think I could put my wife and children through that; but, there doesn't seem to be anything left that's worth living for, or any realistic hope that things are going to change.
 
Perhaps this program will be able to help.  I probably have another 30 years of life left.  I really don't want to spend them all feeling like this.
