Group Discussion on Session 1

for 14 år siden 0 217 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Doing my activity tracker, I have noticed that my depression seems to be worst in the evening. It's like I'm reflecting on the day and all I can see is the negative things that occured. In the morning, I wake up feeling optimistic and ready to tackle another day, hoping I won't get depressed throughout. But I usually always do, it's almost like sleeping resets everything. Anyone else ever feel that way?

Sid,

This is very interesting.  Yes, negativity can be contagious.  I would suggest dealing with the negativity as you would a negative core belief. Assess the validity of the negativity.  We will be discussing this more in later sessions.  What do you do now to cope?  What are some ideas you have?

Members, how do you deal with negative people?  This is actually a good thread topic.  Feel free to start one.

The one thing that I have learned from my activity tracker is that negative posts and negative people affect my mood a great deal which can take me from being in a very positive place to a very dark place.  I really need to find a way to not let this happen or just stay away from negative people. Negativity seems to be contagious.  What is your take on this?  Does anyone else have this problem?  And how do you deal with it?      I am going to work on incorporating some pleasant activities into my daily life and see if this helps.

Thank you for your contributions everyone.

Lance, try to get as far through session one as you can.  There is no set place.  I will be posting a discussion on session two on Thursday.  This thread will remain open.

I am hearing a lot of you have been tracking your activities.  Thank you for sharing.  Is there anything else you noticed about the activity tracker?

Off to a great start everyone! Thank you!

OK I was a little intimidated and upset about that. Sorry.  I got as far as CBT section. I have read it before and need to re read. Esp. since its hard to concentrate with loud sports on the TV in the background all the time.

Where should I be on the program anyway.

Involuntary Defeat Strategy (IDS)

Scientists have named this signal the “Involuntary Defeat Strategy” (IDS). It is important because it shows that we no longer want to fight or compete, and that we’re ready to give up or give in.

So this tells me, I am choosing to have depression, that I want to be miserable and hopless. Is that what this sounds like? Maybe people that havnt gone through this should try it before they judge. I hate the way things are and the way I am right now. Why do you feel like giving up, because your enjoying it????????????

I have been doing my Activity Tracker and mood tracker for about a week now.  It seems that my depression is at its worst in the morning with negative thoughts and replaying of events in my mind.  It gets better as the day goes on and I am usually more  positive by noon.  I spent all day yesterday making myself a binder of the complete program that way I will not have to sit on the computer to work the program and can continue to work on it if I am not at home. I do feel good about getting organized.  My partner has been very supportive and helped me put this binder together.  I am happy that I have him to discuss the program with, he is helping me to stay positive and motivated.  I am really interested in learning how to deal with my negative thoughts.  I know this not going to be easy learning a whole way of thinking but I am sure it is going to be worth it in the end.  This is a whole new world for me and I feel like I am just now learning how to crawl.  I am beginning to understand this illness and myself and I have hope for the future.  I have to learn how to crawl before I can walk into a better place.
Anyway enough about me.  How is everyone else doing with the program this morning?

I hope I stayed on Topic.

Lance go to the section labeled "toolbox".  There should be a green list on right side of page.  Each item has either a "+" sign in a box next to it (which means there is more information if you click on it) or a "-" sign in a box next to it (which means there isn't any more.
Look for the one entitled "Depression Center".  It has a box with a box next to it, letting you know if there is more information under that heading.  Under the heading of Depression Center; you are looking for the very first session entitled "depression".  If you will click on it; it will take you to the first session.
I just read what I wrote and it may be clear as mud.  But I hope not and hope it helps you get to session 1 and start working with us.  I found the information, which I initially thought was gonna be "old news" to be very informative.  I will be curious to see what you think and how you plan organize and arrange homework.  There are some great suggestions below.
Let us know if you need more help Lance - why wait until tonight - do it now!

I find that I am moving at an upbeat, but steady pace. However, I do not wish to rush and would like to work at the same pace as others in the group in order to get the most out of it. I found the first session was helpful to me. I have been making a daily activity tracker and mood tracker for myself. I have not visited the site daily, but I do check it weekly. I feel more encouraged to continue on a good path and the homework helps me to find a starting place. For me, it is always hard to know where to start. It seems almost an impossible task. I like that the sessions help me to organize everything, which is something I definitely need, in order to progress in this program with effective and accurate results.

Part of tracking my symptoms is the daily mood tracker. Also, how many daily goals/activities I commit to doing. The more I get done, the better I feel. I check things off as I go along and later, look back on my activities that week and see how many of the daily tasks I had done and how many I set out to do but have not completed. It really helps me to see where I'm at.

I hope I stayed within the group topic. My mind has so much static sometimes that I can't concentrate on one thought or idea at a time.
