Want hubby to get off his high horse

cincere, Firstly, congratulations on 27 days smoke free, you should be proud. Maybe the best thing to do is be a strong positive influence in your husbands life. Sometimes men can be stubborn. As we all know that ;p. Stay strong for your husband. Try not to push him too much as for he may go back to the other direction. Just let him know that you are there for him. He will come around and realize things for himself. Smoking one cigarette is much better than smoking a pack or two. Be patience, taking tiny steps may just be the right thing for him. How can I get my hubby off his high horse and see that he needs to prepare for his quit? I know that I can't make him quit but I want him to succeed so badly. 5 Years ago I quit and A week later he joined me. I made it for 4 years,he went 1 & 1\2. After many ups and downs I stupidly took the attitude if u can't beat him join him ( he was drinking too much as well). Soon after I was up to 25 cigs a day and drinking as well. Then my daughter announced to our church that mom spends all her time in the shed. Wake up call!! Well as a mom I knew that I was slipping back into dangerous waters ,(for my kids as well as myself) So I resolved to quit again. hubby and I both set a date and I was ready. My husband? He pannicked and said we should at least wait til after the weekend. That told me that he wasn't ready but that didn,t deter me. He can have his shed , his smokes and his beer, I wanted my life back. I am so happy about my decision. I changed my behaviors, started working out twice a day and at day 27 of my quit I have never felt better. Then just yesterday,my husband decided that he was done,no more smoking. No patches, no preperation just do it. Lunchtime today,he confessed to having just 1 cigarette. How do I help him too see that his addiction is stronger than him? That it's o.k to ask for help. Whatever he decides to do it won't affect my quit but it does affect our family. Thanks for letting me vent. This support group is great. Why do men find it sooo hard to reach out? Cincere, That's a tough situation to be in. We have lots of members here who's partners smoke or quit with them and then relapsed and I can only imagine how tough that would be. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything you can do to make him want to quit and stick with it. You can tell him what you'd like for him to do and you can support and encourage him, but unfortunately, it has to be his decision. That's a very tough situation and I feel very badly for you but I hope that soon, he will make the right choice and quit for good. Sorry, I don't have the answers. Crave the Quit! Hi, cincere. Unfortunately, you can't get your hubby off his high horse and any attempts will just make it worse. It's a male ego thing that keeps him from admitting he needs help (preparing and coming here both equal help). He's got to protect his precious ego or some body part may fall off. All you can do is protect your own quit and let him find his own way. Hopefully, he won't see your successful quit as an indictment against him because he can't. Hopefully, he will see your success and an indicator that he can be successful, too. And he can, once his head's on straight. So don't push or nag him. When he tries, encourage him. When he slips, encourage him to try again. cincere, You've already gotten such good advice here and I think it's awesome that you've found the strength and determination in a situation that could have quickly discouraged you from continuing with your own plan. I agree with everyone here in that you can't bring your husband to the point of quitting or maintaining his quit ... but... obviously he has the "quit bug". It's on his mind and he's trying so I just wanted to add one thing... As great as your example and influence may be, don't assume your husband is watching you to see how you're doing it. Every once in a while, talk about your quit and the things that you've learned or about the skills that help you. Give him some gum for the next time he has lunch and tell him to chew it instead of smoking. Print articles and leave them where he can see them...etc. You can give him tools ...and hopefully, you will have given him what he needs to get through without him having to ask for help. This way he can keep all his body parts (lol Shevie) Also, don't worry if he's prepared or not. I totally wasn't prepared. I used my new found free time to learn...and it was a great and educational way to get through cravings. Of course, you'll have to gather that info for him :) You're doing great...almost a month! Congratulations!..and let us know how things go. Hi cincere, You can't force your husband to quit. All you can do is lend some words of encouragement. Don't let your quit be affected by him, though. Stay strong and determined. This quit is yours!
