There are soooo many things about this addiction that are absolutly stupid. Like, yesterday I was going crazy because I wanted a cigarette to celebrate going a week without a cigarette. Like, I had an uncle that died of lung cancer at 35, but because he worked in a steel mill, all my smoking relatives claim it was because of his job. It's easier I guess. I miss him alot but he is never mentioned at family gatherings because no one wants to face the fact that he was taken from us by cigarettes. Like yesterday I was going crazy and today I feel much better. Nothing makes sense about this scencless addiction. I know, I have to beg my mother to at least go outside away from her oxygen tank to smoke. I don't feel comfortable with her smoking in the house even when the valve is off (you never know, it could be leaking or something) but I know that she does it all the time when I am not there. Pete:
Stupit or smart nicotine makes no distinction.
I think that sums it up nicely Pete. Addiction does not discriminate between smart, stupid, poor, rich, young, old. Addiction paralyzes people. It is addiction. It is not stupidity. Nicotine is a drug. It is an addicting drug. Addiction causes people to become addicted. When one uses nicotine and becomes hooked (all it takes is one for many people) it causes them to compulsively need it (nicotine) over and over again. As smokers we say we are stupid for smoking, like putting ourselves down it going to help us to quit. It isn't. Smokers need to start realizing ... no, they are NOT stupid. They are addicted to a drug. They are a junkie. People that are addicted to nicotine should be allowed to enter a rehab program like any other drug user ... because it is no different in my opinion. Wow Bubba, What a story! Just goes to show the power of nicotine and why maintaining your quit is so important. Danielle __________________________________ The SSC Support Team

Bubba - The same thing has happened with my husband's employee, his shop foreman. He was diagnosed with tongue cancer and I went to see him right before his surgery and he had a cancer stick in his mouth. It was so sad to see this addiction so strong that he couldn't even stop when he had cancer in his mouth. A stupid addiction if you ask me. Yes, indeed it is profound. Like a mouse manipulating a bar that will continually drop food over and over again while the mouse gets bigger and bigger and more unhealthy. I have been that with my smoking and never want to go back. We are smarter and have more control than those mice! Very sad Bubba. Pete you said:
To see an old lady dragging a big green oxygen tank into Wal-Mart with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth is just another reminder of how really bad this addiction is
I always thought this would be me. I pictured myself like this one day. I am so glad that things change. Change is good. Breaking free of the addiction always seemed impossible to me. I perfectly understand the rationale of being on a stretcher and wanting a cigarette before being transferred. Sad, but true. It's both, Bubba. Addiction begets stupidity. But then, addiction begins because of stupidity. Vicious cycle, isn't it? Living in a glass house I sure as hell am not going to toss stones as I was one of the more stupid ones. After all Duffis did to encourage me and even quit smoking for me himself, I lost it and started smoking again after 5 months of not smoking. Nicotine addiction is TERRIBLE period. It can cripple the strong and lay waste to some of the best. To see an old lady dragging a big green oxygen tank into Wal-Mart with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth is just another reminder of how really bad this addiction is. Stupit or smart nicotine makes no distinction. I am greatful for all the friendships here at the SSC. I don't post much but during my struggles with what was happening with Bob I got a lot of comfort from just knowing you were all here. Keep the faith and just don't smoke.
