Both of my parents smoke. They are now in their early 60's, and have been smoking for about 40-45 years, give or take. Mom's health is not the best (smoking related issues) Dad so far (knock on wood) is OK, but as we all know, it's just a matter of time. I have one brother and one sister, both younger. Brother has never smoked (to my knowledge, even as a teen) and sis is a social smoker. Or so she tells me. I started when I was 17 (to look cool, of course) and will be 40 this year. My parents did not smoke. My 2 oldest daughters used to b*itch constantly about their Dad and I smoking. When they hit their late teens, they both started smoking. I attribute it to the friends they hung out with. I personally believe peer pressure plays a bigger role in teen smoking than having parents who smoke (my opinion). I started smoking after finishing nursing school. Alot of the people I worked with smoked on their breaks and I made the mistake of playing with cigs. Before I realized it, I was hooked. My dad smoked until I was about 12 and I remember hounding him to quit all the time, then one day his blood pressure was through the roof Doc told him quit or it would kill him. So he quit Cold Turkey just like that after starting at like 14 yrs old and smoking for about 24 years. Mom never has smoked. Grandpa on moms side smoked and died of a heart attack when my mom was only 15, he was 48. Grandma on moms side died of lung cancer in April age 84 didn't smoke a day in her life(just secondhand smoke). 2 out of 5 of their kids smoke. Grandparents on dads side neither one smoked. 3 out of 5 of their kids smoke. I have an older sister that has never smoked and a younger brother that smokes a little, his choice of nicotine is chew he started at about the age of 13. I started smoking about 8 yrs after my dad quit, age 20 and smoked for 12 yrs. Some aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides smoke. I think this has to do with generational education. I'm 52. My dad, lots of relatives all smoked. They were not taught how bad it was until it was too late. My generation was already smoking (teens, etc. ) when we started to learn how bad it is. We have been stubborn quitting because we close an eye to the bad effects. Our children are mostly repulsed by smoking because school, parents, tv has taught them how disgusting smoking really is. Plus we all have genetic quirks that make some of susceptible to crutches while others are not. My dad was a heavy smoker died at 51 and my mom never smoked died at 73. My one sister hated smoking and another sister still smokes. I smoked, my husband chewed tobacoo. I have three daughters and only one smoked, she quit when I did. Education in my opinion is the key. My Mom smoked when I was very young, I can remember her stinking of cigarette smoke and riding in the car with the windows rolled up as to not mess up her hair. I hated it! I remember thinking how can anyone do that! I was so proud of her when she quit! My Dad smoked a cigar every now and then but not in the house. I will never do that!! I do not think that was as much impact on you as the friends you have at a young age. All my friends smoked and I just wanted to fit in. (especially one Girl with Big * * ) that I really wanted to impress. If you really want to know what starts one to smoke? It is a smoker that Influences you whether it is a friend or relative, Fanily. Super thread BFS. Neither of my parents smoked but both my brother and I were smoking by the time we were 13. It was peer pressure.....it was cool and somehow rebellious to smoke. My wife smoked when I met her but stopped immediately she found that she was pregnant 13 years ago and has not smoked since. I am pretty sure that both my children are safe..........they have watched my battle and check my quit meter daily! Butterfly: Both of my parents smoked. My mom actually let me start smoking at home at 15 when she found out I smoked so I would not be out with gangs smoking "other things" . That sounds pretty funny now. I wonder the same thing, but I think maybe those statistics are a little off. Both of my parents never smoked. All of my sisters (except the two youngest so far) smoked by the time we were 18. One has quit successfully (but is also 300 pounds :gasp: ) Though we did have alot of aunts and uncles that smoked, but they also were dropping like flies... Both of my husbands parents are chain smokers. Both him and his brother used to chew, but never smoked. I wish I had an answer too. I don't ever want my children to smoke and have to go through this.
