This is so interesting...
Both my parents smoked. My dad had a severe heart attack at 52, quit smoking but picked up chewing tobacco. He died at 68 of residual damage to a heart valve that lead to congestive heart failure. My mom continued to smoke until the age of 68 or so, and quit for 5 years, started back again, and within 3 years had lung cancer. Died at 79.
Two brothers and sister, and we all smoked. Oldest brother now has emphysema (55 years old), second oldest is well on his way. My sister and I have quit for prolonged periods of time over the years, but always pick it back up, saying "only as a social thing" - wrong!
I am glad to say that all four of us have quit now, due to the diagnosis of emphysema for my oldest brother. I am concerned that the brothers are going to have trouble staying quit, even with diseases looming in their future. They are both on the patch right now. My sister and I will do what we can to help - we are determined to stay off nicotine forever!!
