Hi Guys - I woke up with a major anxiety/panic attack today and just cant seem to shake it. I went for a long run, having been breathing - just dont know whats up. Nothing unusual happend in my life to cause me undue stress - work and love are great. I haven't had any overwhelming cravings or urges to smoke in well over a week. Now I am overwhelmed with this strange feeling. I imagine its partly linked to the fact that I have been distancing myself from the heavy smokers in my life and I'm feeling guilty about it. In particular, my grandmother is a chain smoker. Her and i are about as close as two people can get. I try to take her out shopping every other week or so. We always spend hours and hours talking together. Unfortunately, she smokes in her house and wont be deterred from it. Also, I got my car detailed last summer and banned smoking in it. When I went to take her out she flipped right out so I let her smoke in the car. Since I quit I've been avoiding her because I know I'm not ready to be exposed to smoke in enclosed spaces. Its bad enough to breath it outside....But I love her and want to see her. She's 80, blind and recently recovered from throat cancer. She's really my best bud too. She quit smoking for one year in 2001 but since then will not be deterred. There's no where for her to smoke outside at her place either. I cant really say hey granny - want to step down that flight of stairs and go have your ciggy outside....I spoke to her Friday and she's really down in the dumps. No one else in the family spends time with her...Any advice on what to do? Hannaher my hat's off to you girl, congrats you are strong committed non smoker. This is a tough one, maybe you can ask granny to have a couple of cigs before you leave and explain to her that in the car it makes you feel sick, and as soon as you're out of the car she can smoke again, think this could be done ? :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 49 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 741 Amount Saved: $196 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 12 Mins: 31 Seconds: 12

Hannaher... protect your quit at all costs. You can talk to your grandmother on the phone. Relationships can happen without face to face contact. At this stage of your quit, it is wise to avoid other smokers. The junkie thinking doesn't need any help. I'm sure you have plenty of it without being around the smell and temptation. You have an awesome quit going there and you don't want to lose it. I have issues with Anxiety too and a lot of times, recognizing what it is that is causing your anxiety can be a huge relief. Keep it all in perspective and keep your quit out in front. You are doing great! Keep going. hannaher, Wow, that's a tough call, isn't it? As close as I was with my grandmother, who is now deceased, I know, given the opportunity again, I would spend all the time with her that I could. At the same time, you don't want to put your quit at risk. Well, since there is no manual for this type thing, all I can do is tell you what I think I'd do in your situation. Maybe you could still go and see her but shorten our visits. As for the car, be sure the window on her side is slightly cracked and all the other windows closed to pull the smoke out. Be sure you have candies, mints, water, whatever coping skills you need to help you when it may feel tempting. If at any time, it gets to feeling like too much, since your grandmother can't leave the room...you can. Maybe you could get her a clean air machine? Use a fan in a window to pull the smoke out? You surely don't want the result of throat cancer as your grandmother has experienced. You also want to keep her close to you. I guess as ex smokers, we all need to eventually deal with being around those that do smoke. You're at 3 weeks...so I know you're strong. I'm sure you'll find a way to get through these trying times without smoking. In turn, maybe your anxiety will ease, you and your grandmother will feel much better and you'll become a very, very strong ex smoker. You keep hanging in there. Since you want this so badly, you'll find a way. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/2/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 545 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,908 Amount Saved: $1945.65 Life Gained: Days: 57 Hrs: 18 Mins: 3 Seconds: 53

hanna, This is a tough choice to make. Don't sacrifice your relationship with someone you care about. I always learn something from the elders even if some of the choices I know they make are not the right ones :) Take the time to explain your situation to her and communicate that it may be hard for you at times to deal with her smoking. It is her you love, not her habit. You on the right path and are doing great! Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
