Phil I did the same thing that you did. I told everyone. As a matter of fact, the class I am speaking to is instructed by the professor I had when I quit. I had a presentation to do on organizaitonal behaviour and did it on stress which I related back to smoking and the affects of quitting. Free, unfortunately, my speech will probably be like my presentations were when I was in class. A few jotted notes and then a winging it from there. Thank you everyone for your help and your support. I was amazed at the fact that everyone in this class knew someone close to them that was a smoker. I shared my experience along with the help of some of your suggestions and stories. Luna, I hope you don't mind but I used your story that you bump on your anniversaries because it is so inspirational. Shevie, I used your nicotine and the brain information. I also used a lot of information and examples from the rest of you. You will be pleased to know that the stories of our quits and what we have been through really sparked a lot of questions. The entire speech and question/answer session lasted for an hour and a half. The questions were really good too...for example... Why are some quits easy and some hard? Why can't someone quit when their health is threatened? Do attitudes change when we quit? Does life change? Do people really think of cigarettes as their friends? Does an online support site really make a difference? Is smoking a habbit or an addiction? Do you think the different levels of nicotine in cigarettes make it harder or easier to quit? Several questions that sparked awesome discussion. Who knows, maybe someone will even decide to quit and come here for support. I gave everyone the address and told them what an awesome community this is. The professor has asked me to do the same again next semester. She is a never-smoker however watched her mother die of lung cancer. The quit story has really touched her and she has been with me every step of the way during the quit process. Always encouraging. Quitting changes lives. Hopefully, educating others about the addiction of smoking can save some one elses life. Thank you again those of you that took the time to respond and email your suggestions. Hi, Lady. Wow, I'd forgotten all about this. I remember how excited you were when you mentioned it a while back. :) Maybe you can record your speech, then have it transcribed. I'd really like to see it, too. I bet a lot of people here would. I quit because of the typical reasons: health, money, social status. There was the time involved, too: Time to go to the ATM to get the money. Time to go to the store on the reservation (a couple of miles out of my way) to get the cigs. Time spent missing part of PBS shows because they don't have commercial breaks. Time spent on vacation trips in rest stops "taking a break" which really meant "getting a fix". Time stolen from talking with my wife. Time stolen from relaxing after a meal. Time stolen from waking slowly in the morning. What keeps me quit: Everytime I take a deep breath, I notice how much easier it is now, how much deeper, and no more rattles, gurgles, or coughs. Everytime I run an agility course I notice how faster I recover. Everytime I laugh hard I notice that I can laugh hard and long without breaking into a hacking fit on the first "Ha". Everytime I wear a shirt bought after I quit, I think "Never any burn holes in this one." Sometimes I'll sniff the index and middle fingers on my right hand just to enjoy the lack of the "smoke stink". Everytime I lean over my wife's shoulder to look at something on her monitor I notice she doesn't cough and move her head away from me anymore. The list goes on, but these are examples of the many small things I notice everyday in recognition of the success of my quit. Even though I still have an occasional "twinge", nothing is so bad that it will outweigh all the benefits. I think the small things are where the true success lies and if we recognize all the small benefits we will have a much easier time of it. Keep up the good quits, everyone. That is wonderful, Lady. I'm so glad it went well. I'm even more glad that your audience was actively interested in quitting smoking, even though I'm sure not all of them smoked. Perhaps those will pass the information on to friends and relatives that do smoke. And so on, and so on... lady, there have been a couple of significant reasons for my quit. you would think that health would be the #1 reason, it is so so obvious, but i am not sure that is my #1 reason. i would have to say about a week ago i accidently heard a loved one say to someone else, "i wish i could help barbara quit, i really want her to stop, i don't know what to do". that comment really stopped me in my delusional tracks. for some reason, many i am sure, it really stopped me. i really felt like i needed to stop kidding myself, stop lying to myself, stop being so selfish and irresponsible with my mind and body, stop wasting my money, i was loosing the one thing that was 100% totally mine and mine alone. and that is me.
