Still just a puff away ...

Boy I am at that stage once again too especially after this past week. There does come a time when you don't think about cigarettes or it might be once every 6 months. I am on my second successful quit, there have been attempts the last two years, but it was that IF I COULD JUST HAVE ONE- that led up to having to set another quit date. My first successful quit was 8 years ago this august 1st. I did it for 6 years and after a while it does not cross your mind but once in a great while, but you feel so good you're like no way. Why I started again was stupid and self-destructive. My boyfriend was using drugs occasionally so I thought it was a way for me to cope, to destress, but all I did was add to it because then I had all this guilt and shame on top of everything else. I am now almost 3 weeks "clean" and feel good and every day this weekend have wanted to smoke, but I tell myself the thought will pass and it does. I know the agony I will cause myself if I have one. Because one thing leads to another and I will be right back where I was 4 weeks ago. Feeling like crap, not breathing good, ashamed of myself for myself and my family, especially my 7 yr old twins, who I don't want to pick up my habits. So yes there is a time when you don't think about it as much, but it will always be a part of who you were. Keep strong.

I'm not an old timer so I can't give you wisdom. But it took a long time to create the habit, and I feel it will take a long time to rewire your brain. You have an amazing amount of time, and I bet the good days are much greater than your bad days. Hang in there! You have an amazing quit, tomorrow will be a better day. I will be very interested to see how different it is going to be for me and my daughter. I smoked for 35 years, 2 to 3 packs a day. She smoked for two years, from 14 to 16 just a half pack to a pack a day. I'm pretty sure I will always have the addiction "just under the surface of my quit" (who ever said that in this thread: that's a great saying) I could not have an open cigarette pack in front of me right now for sure. But maybe it's not too late for my daughter! At least I hope that she is not perminatly "damaged" in that way. I only have one kid that has never smoked. He says he never even considers it. I know I will probly never have that experiance of that kind of freedom, but I am going to always remember: N.O.P.E.
So in answer to your question, I will say yes you will get to a point where you are free, free and free from this monkey on your back. How long it takes you depends on how hard you train your mind not to smoke.
I ditto Duffis and N2K. Keep striving to be completely free. You CAN get there. Phreaknbz, Don't let these thoughts discourage you. I don't think there's one answer to this question as everyone' quit is different. Just give it time and keep practicing your new behaviors. Danielle _______________________________ The SSC Support Team

Oh boy could I relate. I guess I am not alone but it scares me because I really dont want to go back to smoking. I went through alot to get here and the weight gain alone is enough to say I dont want to have done this all for nothing. But I wish I knew when this desire does go away. Or will this be a fight forever. Well good luck to you and hopefully we will all conquer this demon. It will be worth it.
Thanks everybody. Sometimes it helps to here what it will be like in another 5 to 6 months. I know that I wont smoke again, I guess that's why it seems so strange with the thought pops into my mind. I feel that I'm old enough that I've run out of time to quit, and then smoke, and then quit... Gees, I'm getting to old for that crap ;-). I turned 43 on the 6th of July.
Add a few years a few months and you could be me so weird how the smoking thoughts are still there. I like to get real busy cause when I am really busy I can cover them over really good. It amazes me that I sometimes feel like if I had a cigarette, I'd smoke it... in a heart beat!! Then I get my sanity back and think... no, no, no... Remember what it was like to quit... arg... Remember, not one puff every, if you smoke one... etc. etc. I just can't believe that I still think this way. I'm going to ask the old timers another one of those questions... Is there a time where it doesn't seem like you could slip in a split second? When "I need a cigarette!" does not cross your mind? When will I think, "I need to go do yoga" or "I need a drink!" or ANYTHING but "I need a cigarette". Hey, check it out... I'm heading for a full 5 months here :-). Unfortunately my little brain is still thinkin "I want a ...;-)" My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 149 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,475 Amount Saved: $1043 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 12 Mins: 44 Seconds: 15

i'm not an old timer but yes, i could slip in a second. I still enjoy the odd 'wiff' of a passing cigarette but i know for a fact that i wouldn't enjoy a cigarette & that i would have to re-learn to enjoy it. One thing i've learnt...the information & knowledge i've gathered from reading & searching my addiction, i would have to be insane to start smoking again. but saying this, we are still only human.
