In 2 weeks, in my state, the State of Missouri, voters will be voting on whether or not a new $.80 tax per pack of cigarettes should be implemented. The money will go to health care for uninsured persons, medicaid and up to 15% will go to smoking cessation programs. What's your opinion on this?
Personally, I think that if they're going to tax smokers more, then ALL of the money should go to smoking cessation programs... not just 15%. I know that increased taxes never got me to quit. I did whatever I could to pay the extra money. But now that I'm on the other side, I'm thinking "why do I care how much smokers have to pay for their smokes? I don't have to pay it anymore!" I know that's hypocritical and harsh, but I'm honestly torn on this issue. On one hand, I remember how unfair I thought the taxes were before... but on the other hand, it's not really my problem anymore and all three of these ARE worthy causes. What do you guys think?
Crave the Quit!
